Problem with access to Thomson Reuters Checkpoint federal tax content

I went to federal tax resources on Thomson Reuters Checkpoint (the default screen when one logs on through the Newman Library database) this afternoon and learned we have lost access to most of the primary and secondary resources to which we have subscribed. I have reported this to collection management and it is being looked into.

The Warren Gorham Lamont tax treatises are usually available on this resource.

If you have a federal tax question from a student or faculty member, CCH Intelliconnect is our other database for federal and state tax information. It has the primary sources that are also on Thomson Reuters Checkpoint, as well as secondary resources, including those published by CCH and Wolters Kluwer, that help explain the primary sources; cases, etc. So, please suggest CCH Intelliconnect as an alternative.

Please watch for updates from collection management about the Thomson Reuters Checkpoint resource in the next few days.

Remote Access Anomaly with Factiva (update: fixed on 9 May 2014)

Update: 9 May 2014 This problem is now fixed.

A number of libraries that use EZproxy (like us) for remote login authentication are finding that when you go to Factiva, you get a somewhat scary looking warning message from your browser. Here’s the exact behavior:

  1. User who is off campus clicks on link on library website for Factiva
  2. User gets the usual remote authentication page that asks for Baruch username and password
  3. After successfully entering login info, the browser starts to go to Factiva but then shows a page with a scary looking warning. Depending on your browser, the warning message will look like this:

Chrome

Factiva--browser warning message in Chrome

Firefox

Factiva--browser warning message in Firefox

It is perfectly OK for users to ignore this warning and click the relevant button(s) that let them move on. In Chrome, you click “Proceed Anyway.” In Firefox, you click “I Understand the Risks.” I have contacted tech support at ProQuest (which provides us access to Factiva) for assistance with this and am also looking into possible solutions on the EZproxy mailing list, where this problem has in the last week been raised by a number of other libraries.

Westlaw Campus Research Still Down (UPDATE: now working)

For the past few days, we’ve been getting a login screen from Westlaw Campus Research on and off campus that we shouldn’t be seeing:

westlaw

We’ve contacted the vendor to have them look into this problem. When access is restored, there’ll be a new post here on the blog.

Results Sorting in LexisNexis Academic Is Borked

If you run a search in LexisNexis Academic and try to sort the results from newest to oldest, you’ll see that the results aren’t in the order that you requested (or any order). Sorting from oldest to newest seems to work, as does relevance sorting (as far as I can tell). According to a post today on ERIL-L mailing list, LexisNexis is aware of this problem and a fix for it may not come until May (ugh).

Full Text Links and Cited References Lists in Business Source Complete

Ryan alerted me to a problem that I just reported to EBSCO. If you are in Business Source Complete and click on the “Cited References” link on the left side of an article record, you’ll be taken to a page that lists all the sources used in the article. Below each source is our “Find It” icon that links to our SFX service. For some sources on this list, though, there is both the “Find It” icon AND a link to the full text in HTML or PDF form. Here’s a screenshot of an example of that problem. The article where I took that screenshot from is:

Porter, Michael E. “Consumer Behavior, Retailer Power And Market Performance In Consumer Goods Industries.” Review Of Economics & Statistics 56.4 (1974): 419. Business Source Complete. Web. 21 Feb. 2014.

http://remote.baruch.cuny.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=bth&AN=4642498&site=ehost-live

The full text links work fine and aren’t really a problem, but ideally, the “Find It” button shouldn’t also be showing if the full text is indeed available.
