In class, we briefly discussed the relationship between governments and non-profits. Often times, government cuts to Medicaid and other financial assistance programs often lead to gaps in social services; these gaps are then filled in by the non-profit sector. In the New York Times Op-ed article, “Where Will the Medical Misfits Go?” https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/opinion/sunday/safety-net-hospitals-health-care.html, we see that the relationship between governments and non-profits is a mutually dependent one. Safety-net hospitals are hospitals that are publicly owned and operated by local or state governments. They provide care in under served communities to low income, uninsured individuals. Federal law requires hospitals to provide emergency care to all patients whether or not they are insured or can afford to pay. But patients that need long term care or have health and financial difficulty, cannot always receive care from a for-profit or non-profit hospital. Safety net hospitals provide care for those uninsured individuals thereby creating a subsidy to for-profit or non-profit hospital, so that they can focus on patients that have the ability to pay.
