This article summarizes 12 tips on how to engage stakeholders from a nonprofit’s perspective. These points came from the Sweet Briar College controversy, which has to do with the college in peril of closing due to the board’s decision, but in the end the alums mobilized and prevented the closing. Some of the points resonated with me in that they underscore the importance of accountability and transparency when it comes to informing the constituents. One point was “If constituents don’t know about our challenges and needs, they can’t help us with them,” which further demonstrates how crucial it is to treat constituents as partners with whom nonprofits share important information.
