I came across an article from yesterday about how non-profits are leading the development of artificial intelligence systems in some fields:
The article points out that the reason such organizations are structured as non-profits is because “effective implementation requires massive data” and open-source data (which may not occur if there is a profit motive) advances the development of AI and serves the broader purposes of “public education and knowledge sharing.”
For these non-profits, then, it seems their “stakeholders” include the tech community writ large, and maybe even future generations of coders who could build on their ideas. And when it comes to artificial intelligence, I think all of humanity is basically the ultimate “stakeholder” because of concerns (legitimately acknowledged by leading scientists and theorists in the field) that the AI we develop not become malevolent and turn against humankind. Perhaps even the robots themselves are “stakeholders” in a sense.
