Lesson Three Shared Resource

The above link explains a common problem when Boards and Executive Directors do not work in tandem, focusing on a clearly articulated mission. This is what Fisman, Khurana, and Martenson would call “deviating from True North”. The example given is about organizations who donated to the relief efforts during Hurricane Sandy and were not reimbursed by FEMA because the donations to this cause were not a direct reflection of their mission. Nearly all decisions are a slight deviation from the true mission, but some decisions deviate significantly. While these decisions may be good-intentioned, they can result in financial insolvency if mission creep causes reductions in reimbursement.
