Universities Experiment with Crowdfunding as Early Donor Engagement

Here is an interesting article about Virginia Tech utilizing a crowdfunding platform to collect donations from donors. The outcome was successful, and “the projects benefit less popular student groups and low-cost activities, encouraging small donations from a large number of donors.” It made me think of the IssueLab article on the increasing use of technology in the nonprofit sector as one of the emerging trends. As the nonprofit sector adapts to demographic and generational shifts, nonprofit organizations must incorporate a variety of current technologies into efforts toward achieving the mission. Crowdfunding has been shown to be successful and is easy to use. I can see this method becoming one of the most common options for fundraising by nonprofits.
