Olympics

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

I remember four years ago, when the Olympics was held in Beijing the opening scene was amazing and well prepared. I love how creative it was and it was obvious that China had actually put alot of effort to prepare this. However, the opening for the Olympics in London was a little bit disappointing. To be honest, i am completely lost with the Olympics this year because i did not catch up with all those events going on. I either surf online for results and medal count, or watch short highlights. If only cable can provide live access to each competition held, then i would have the motivation to watch each competition for the Olympics. I get annoyed when i only have the opportunity to watch small clips online, or watch 30 second scenes from the news about the Olympics.
I am not an athletic person so not all types of sports would be appealing to me. However, swimming, diving and high bars might be the sports i will only watch during the Olympics.
It is amazing to see how all of these wonderful athletes from all over the world spend years preparing themselves to be able to compete for their country in the Olympics.
Based on my Opinion, it is very difficult for small countries to be able to compete in the Olympics because countries like US, China, England, Japan, seems to be on top of the list throughout most of the Olympics record.
Just today, they announced about the Badminton scandal between Korea, Indonesia and China. They were disqualified for they act of not “giving their best effort to win a match.” I don’t agree with this statement because they are being disqualified for not giving effort. It doesn’t really make sense! I know it is the Olympics and it is a big deal for the whole world, however, you can’t really force someone to win. It is not a valid statement after all. Now, there’s rumors spreading all around about how these three countries are trying to cheat to win a medal. After watching to clips, i’m pretty sure that they all have the skills in order to be able to participate in the Olympics. But they are doing this as a Strategy, not a way to cheat. We never know what the truth is about this scandal and what we see might not be always be true.
Altogether, the scandal was surprising and upsetting at the same time. however, i think i should catch up with the Olympics.

NBC's Olympic Broadcasting

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

Gabby Douglas won gold in the women’s individual all-around gymnastics event this afternoon at 1:30p.m. Yet NBC will not be broadcasting this until 8pm or later, tonight. If the final result has already been released, then what’s the point of airing the event ?

We tune into the Olympics to watch the teams compete. We like to see how some fall and rise to the occasion. We like to expect the unexpected.
When the final results are about to be shown, everyone is practically hanging out of their seats in anguish, the results will either be what we hoped for, or a complete turn over. This momentum is what makes sports so exciting.
This momentum though, has now been lost for the night. When the women’s all-around airs tonight, I doubt there will be crazy fanatics glued to their t.v. The questions of, “who will be the winner,” has already been answered.

Chick-Fil-A President Under Fire, But Is It Fair?

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

Chick-Fil-A President and COO, Dan Cathy, has experienced relentless criticism from the LGBT community and various government officials for his recent comments opposing same-sex marriages.

Cathy, a firm Christian and Sunday school teacher, believes in the biblical concept of a marriage being between a man and a woman. He let his beliefs be known in a recent Baptist Press Interview.

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” he said.

New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, recently sent NYU a letter urging them to evict New York City’s sole franchise.

Quinn, the first openly gay, married City Council speaker, has been a longtime advocate for same sex marriages.

Just recently, Quinn along with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and several other public officials celebrated the one year anniversary of the Marriage Equality Act which generated the city about $259 million.

“Chick-fil-A is not welcome in New York City as long as the company’s president welcomes continues to uphold and promote his discriminatory views,” said Quinn.

Quinn is not the only politician enraged over Mr. Cathy’s remarks.

The mayors of major cities like Boston, San Francisco and Chicago, have all expressed interest in running Chick-Fil-A out of town.

Although, Mayor Bloomberg feels differently and so do I.

On his weekly radio appearance, the mayor says that he doesn’t think that Cathy’s anti-same sex marriage beliefs is a valid reason to kick them out of the city.

“You really don’t want to ask [about] political beliefs or religious beliefs. That’s not government’s job,” he said.

I don’t think that anyone should be ostracized because of their personal values and beliefs. My stance is that everyone is entitled to their first amendment right, whether you’re a politician, businessman or hard-working citizen. I also agree with the mayor and don’t think that people should be excluded from conducting business because of their religious beliefs.

So whether you’re an advocate or adversary of same-sex marriage, I think we should all respect each other’s views and not let them interfere with business.

BADMINTON BLACK SOX

Olympics – London 2012

Eight top seeded female badminton players were sent home after admitting to losing their matches on purpose.

These eight players were purposefully dropping points in order to get an easier draw for the medal round.

The botching of play was so blatantly obvious that after players continuously hit the birdie into the net and served it out of bounds, the fans started to pick up on the mischievous play at hand. They booed the players off the court.

These athletes have already been sent packing, but it brings up a very interesting question, is this the correct call?

In sports, it is not uncommon to lose games during the current season in order to get a higher draft pick for the next year. Essentially, these girls were doing the same thing. They were losing today to make tomorrow easier, a very smart strategy on their part.

Of course, you don’t set up the Olympics in a way that people try to lose, but you can’t blame the athletes for finding a loophole.

Perhaps it is time to make some edits to the rule book for 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Down the Rabbit Hole..Into the Subway?

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

Alice in Wonderland seems to interest New Yorkers: from the three spin off restaurants, Alice’s Tea Cup (Chapters 1, 2, and 3), to the bronze statute featuring Alice and others from Wonderland in Central park. So its not surprising that Alice and her fellow characters were made permanent subway art.

Located at the 50th street station on the No. 1 train line, is “Alice: The Way Out” by Liliana Porter. Crafted from glass mosaic, the panels are placed on the platform walls of both the uptown and downtown train lines. Installed in 1994, the art depicts a silhouette Alice in blue mosaic pulling back what appears to be a curtain.

Also shown is the mad hatter, a card solider, the queen of hearts, the white rabbit, and more. Porter crafted “Alice: The Way Out” to allow viewers to interpret the silhouettes as they please, and leave actions of the characters up to the imagination.

Because the subway system is underground and Alice fell down the rabbit hole, I think this is a very clever way of showing a classic character in a new light. If you ever find yourself on the west side in midtown, I suggest you take a peek.

It Got to Me !

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

As I was writing my op-ed piece yesterday afternoon, I started getting a bit touchy. I just started to write what I was feeling. I barely thought or said to myself this is how I’m going to write it, it just came to me. Do you guys ever have that feeling that you can’t stop writing? I had that feeling yesterday.  I was watching videos of dogfights to get more in the mood. I saw their injuries and my eyes started to get watery. I just don’t understand what people see in this “game” what amuses them so much? Is seeing a dog full of blood, barking and biting the other dog so amusing? If it is, I don’t see it and I’m happy I don’t see it. If I were a famous person, who had a lot of money I would focus on the animal abuse and the animal shelters because I don’t believe animals should get killed just because they cant fit in a shelter. I remembered when I was lying down in my bed with my dog by my side watching Marley & Me, I cried while hugging my dog. I recommend all of you to see Marley & Me and also, HaChi: A Dog’s Tale.  Best movies ever made about dogs.

The Battle of Opinions

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

So Daniel and I will be writing dual opinion articles. I will be writing about women’s gymnastics and he will be writing about men’s gymnastics. The big question is the hype behind it and which should be watched by the masses (that may or may not change). I am Looking forward to this because I want to see what he argues. I’ll make sure to try and write the best opinion piece I can. Tonight though the women’s all around will be taking place and hopefully it adds information to my article. Its going to be a tough battle but I think Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas will do fine (hopefully I’m not jinxing it). Even though I’m backing women’s gymnastics I have to say congratulations to first time Olympian Danel Leyva for winning the bronze medal in the men’s all around finals.

Review of News Article Project

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

Our first project for class was to write a 500-800 word news article on a current topic, issue, or event in New York City. We were required to do reasearch on what we were writing back, call and set up interviews, and write three drafts (which we were graded on each). Our interviews were not only with people we knew but also man-on-the-street interviews and bigger sources (doctors, police officers, etc.)
For the most part I enjoyed the project. I chose to write about the policy change on the small amount of marijuana. I enjoyed researching and interviewing a lot of my friends.
However the worst part was when I called places/people like Hakeem Jeffries or the Drug Policy Alliance no one ever called me back. The same day I talked to the woman about Hakeem Jeffries she said she would email me and she never did. That was the biggest down fall of the project. I had to use quotes from a Press release.
Overall I did enjoy doing the project and it showed me what it would take to be a journalist.

Review of StumbleUpon

August 2, 2012 by bb-pawprint

Stumbleupon is a cool website that I have discovered a few months ago. It is a great site to go on when you are bored and you have time to kill. You have to first sign up and then it makes you choose your interests: alternative rock, animals, arts, beauty, oddities, books, cartoons, clothing, movies, music, design, fitness, food, humor, celebrities, internet, jewelry, logic, mythology, nature, photography, poetry, puzzles, quizzes, quotes, travel, weight loss, writing, etc. They give a bunch of different choices and you can choose as many as you like. As soon as you are done choosing, you can get ready to stumble. So the website finds random sites that correspond to your interests and displays it for you .For example, if one of your interests is puzzles, the website finds you a puzzle to do. Or if your interest is jewelry Stumbleupon would find directions of how to make a pretty bracelet. And if your interest has to do with animals it will find you cute pictures or videos of animals. If you like what they showed you, you can press like and other sites like this will pop up later on. You can also dislike if you didn’t like what site they showed you and those types of sites won’t show up anymore. This site is really entertaining; however, it is only good to use when you have time to spare. It’s not a good idea to go on it when you are busy because you will easily get distracted.
