Overview:
Maria Castro is a local community and civic leader, elected to various positions within the New York State Democratic Party, committed to equal access for all at the ballot box and a mission to enhance civic engagement, voter participation and political leadership amongst disenfranchised groups to participate in the democratic process. She is looking to recruit:
College Students studying Business, Communication, Marketing and Political Science and High School Seniors that are smart, energetic, passionate, and enthusiastic candidates to join our team as Summer 2020 Interns. This is an unpaid position; we will support your request for school credit upon receiving approval from the Department Chair at your school.
We are seeking a diverse applicant pool with experience and/or interest in any of the following areas:
- Communications
- Research and public policy
- Voting rights and social justice issues
- Civic engagement and partnerships
- Marketing & Tele-Marketing
- Event Planning
- Campaigns and elections
- Project Management
Responsibilities:
Each intern’s responsibilities will be developed based on their experience, interests, and organizational need, and may include any combination of the following:
- Conducting digital marketing campaigns to enhance voter participation.
- Drafting press releases, statements, emails, fact sheets, and press kit materials;
- Blogging about timely and relevant political issues;
- Assisting to develop creative activations/programs that support the team’s mission;
- Coordinating voter education with partner organizations;
- Developing and maintaining a variety of resources to engage and educate people about elections, the various changes due to COVID-19, and voting rights issues;
- Supporting the civic technology program by researching and outreaching to strategic partners and evaluating tools for needed improvements;
- Creating descriptive and creative ads to improve our SEO;
- Updating websites and building new web pages;
- Cataloging art assets to maximize content creation and distribution;
- Expanding our volunteer program to ensure we are maximizing impact and adding capacity to our team;
- Managing constituency communications, including fielding questions about registration and election deadlines and processes;
- Additional duties as needed.
Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate is a top performer who brings high levels of energy and enthusiasm, works well independently and with diverse teams, and has a demonstrated ability to take initiative and lead projects. Qualifications should include:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
- Digital Marketing;
- Creative writing;
- Strong critical thinking skills;
- Independently collaborate actively with other team members;
- Leadership and achievement in academic, professional, extracurricular, or volunteer settings;
- The ability to work effectively with diverse team members and communities;
- Detail-oriented, well-organized, fast learner, and can multitask;
- Good humored, independent, and flexible (creativity helps too!);
- An affinity for civic engagement;
- Passionate about growing participation of disenfranchised communities.
In your application, please make a special note if you have experience with:
- Journalism, communications, and/or public relations;
- Elections and/or campaigns;
- Digital Marketing skills;
- Research and/or policy;
- Video production;
- Event planning and/or fundraising;
- Developing and/or setting up new projects and programs;
- HTML, CSS, SEO, JavaScript, PHP, Bootstrap, Photoshop, or UI/UX Design.
Hours and Compensation:
Interns will work the total number of hours as requested per the school course requirement. Please note that the Baruch Political Science Department does not award internship credit for summer internships.
