The CUNY Washington, D.C. Internship Program: Application now available

The City University of New York is offering a summer internship program in Washington, D.C. from June 1 to July 31, 2020. The Program will be coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and a Campus Faculty Coordinator at each of the City University’s senior colleges.

Applications are now available from Professor Johnson (NVC 5-276) and the Washington Internship Program website. Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted to Professor Johnson by March 11, 2020—no exceptions. In-person interviews with the CUNY Washington, D.C. Internship Program Selection Committee will be conducted will be conducted on Friday, April 17. In order to be considered, student finalists must be available to attend an interview on that date (time TBA). All students selected for an interview will be notified by mail and/or telephone regarding dates and times.

Eligibility:

The Program is open to any student who will be a Junior or Senior in the Spring 2020 term. Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in and understanding of national government and politics. Applicants must also carry a minimum 3.2 GPA, and must submit two confidential faculty recommendations along with their applications. Applicants must also possess a valid Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number (TIN)— issued by the United States Social Security Administration.

Housing and Award:

CUNY Washington, D.C. Interns will reside at university dormitories for the duration of the program. CUNY will pay for the cost of housing and will provide a $2,000 scholarship to each student to offset living costs in Washington. In rare cases students may be ineligible to receive publicly subsidized benefits from the City University of New York —please contact us before applying if you believe this might apply to you.

Academic Component and College Credit:

All CUNY Washington, D.C. interns must participate in the Program’s academic component, which consists of weekly seminar meetings with prominent members of the Washington, D.C. community. In addition, students will draft research papers and written accounts/analyses of their internship experiences for Campus Faculty Coordinators.

Credits must be arranged—up to 6 credits during the summer or succeeding fall—by students and Campus Faculty Coordinators. All credit arrangements should be made prior to the first day of the internship program, June 1, 2020.

Internship Placements:

Interns will serve for 35 hours per week during the Summer Program. Based on availability, student interest and experience, the Program will offer internship placements in the following types of offices:

  • Legislative offices of U.S. Representatives and Senators;
  • Non-governmental advocacy organizations;
  • Departments of the federal government.

Costa for Queens Borough President: Campaign seeking interns

Costa for Queens Borough President is looking to hire interns from all local colleges and universities to help us elect Costa in 2020! Costa Constantinides believes that everyone in Queens deserves to live without fear of rising seas or rising rents. For qualified, motivated students and recent graduates, this position provides an opportunity to join a grassroots campaign to transform Queens.

The Deval For All campaign is seeking Ballot Access Organizers who are passionate about sharing the campaign’s vision, works well in fast-paced environments, and can effectively communicate within our team and across departments.

As part of our team, you will be working closely with organizers, volunteers, and elected officials to support the political goals of the campaign. You will be responsible for collecting signatures in various states to ensure Governor Deval Patrick is on the ballot. We work to highlight the campaign’s message, elevate and amplify stories of everyday Americans, and provide support to our teams across the country.

  • Recruiting, training, and managing teams of volunteers to collect signatures to get Deval Patrick on the ballot

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) is seeking applicants for the 2020 HACU National Internship Program (HNIP). International Rescue Committee: Front Desk and Intake Intern

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The Front Desk Volunteer will provide coverage for the reception desk, greet and direct client walk-ins, and schedule client appointments with appropriate staff. The Front Desk Volunteer will provide additional clerical assistance and support to IRC staff in the New York regional office.

  • Assess documentation of visitors to determine eligibility of services
  • Schedule appointments for all programs depending on eligibility of client
