Andy Warhol is known for his print screens of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s Soup cans, but the 1960s pop artist actually started his career illustrating novel covers and books of poetry.

The Morgan Library & Museum’s exhibition, Warhol By the Book — which wrapped up this weekend — chronicled the artist’s early career as an art student in the 1950s through the 1980s by presenting a collection of all different kinds of books associated with him, from a high school psychology textbook filled with sloppy scribbles, to books that he himself authored like The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, POPism, and The Andy Warhol Diaries, along with everything in between.

Closer Look: Say Goodbye to Jamal Lyon

On May 12th, Jussie Smollet, tweeted that he will be leaving Fox’s Empire after playing the role of Jamal Lyon for 2 seasons. Jamal Lyon is a famous R&B artist and also the 2nd born son to the CEO of the prestigious record label, Empire. He is also the most beloved the show, since he has been struggling with his father accepting him for being gay.

Why is Jussie Smollet leaving? According to BET.com, Smollet wanted to be paid as much as Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, who play his parents on the show. Both Howard and Henson are already huge stars, so their salary will obviously be more than anyone else in the show, since everyone else (including Smollet) are all rising stars. Continue reading

This Is A Thing: Nihilist Memes

Nihilism is usually a word thrown around by philosophy students who have read too much Albert Camus. But lately, it’s been the source of internet entertainment for a number of memers.

Existential nihilism, a branch of nihilism that states that human existence is devoid of all meaning and value, is supplying the internet with a seemingly endless amount of jokes about “staring into the abyss” — an allusion to Nietzsche’s infamous quote “And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you,” — and about death being the only escape. Get Ready For: The Perfect Gift for Mother

wordMachine.org

Mother and child at dusk

Mother’s Day is upon us once again and the decision to find the perfect gift for the one person who gave birth to you, namely your mother, can be somewhat daunting.

The choices are endless: Should you stick with old faithful in buying flowers or getting her a card, or pick something outside the box? Bustle has some interesting ideas for those looking for help:

The second Sunday in May heralds the day of appreciation to the one person who is always thinking of us. Unfortunately it is not always easy to get something for the most important woman in your life. Seventeen magazine Kelsey Stegman gives us seventeen gift ideas for mother on her day, they range from decadent chocolate treats to comfy night wear, http://www.seventeen.com/fashion/style-advice/tips/g935/mothers-day-gifts/?slide=1

Not one for the sweet sentimental gifts? Well this year even Hollywood is celebrating Mother’s Day with a movie about — wait for it — a mom.

If none of these sounds like the ideal thing for your mother, then falling back on the time honored tradition of giving mom the day off from the kitchen is always a good bet, just try not to end the day in the emergency room from food poisoning.

This Week In TV: THRONES!!!!!!!!!

**DISCLAIMER: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM SEASONS 1-5 OF GAME OF THRONES. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN ALL OF SEASON 5 AND CARE ABOUT SPOILERS, PLEASE STOP READING. NOTHING FROM SEASON 6 IS SPOILED HERE, SO IF YOU’RE UP TO DATE, YOU’RE SAFE. THANK YOU**

HBO’s Game of Thrones is back for a sixth season of violence, amazement, glee, heartbreak, sadness, and overall immense emotional torture.

One would think the roller coaster of emotions GoT puts viewers on would be a turnoff, but it is in fact quite the opposite. What amazes me most about Game of Thrones is the sheer number of actual viewers. It’s the most watched (and the most pirated) show in the world, it’s number one in over 170 countries.
