If you are one of the lucky ones who have purchased Kylie Jenner’s new (and sold out) lip glosses in early April, your lip gloss wands now probably look a cheap 99 cent store knockoff. If you complained about the quality of the high profile makeup line, you are not the only one.

But, it only took one complaint from Jeffree Star, a popular makeup artist and founder of Jeffree Star Cosmetics for Kylie to actually step up and take action on her defective products.

Local Profile: Max

Max Makewell is an up and coming artist in New York City. He grew up on Long Island and was classically trained in art from a young age. Makewell started off sculpting, drawing on paper and using oil on canvas. More recently, Makewell started experimenting with ink on napkins. He would drip ink on napkins and fold them in half, which is what sparked his interest in the psychological Rorschach test. He began experimenting with acrylic colors on canvas and handmade paper; this lead to his most recent fine art series (featured in this video) the “Rorschach Series.”

Makewell started building his brand as an artist in December of 2015 and since then has shown his work in two SoHo galleries. February 11th marked the opening night at the Guy Hepner Gallery where Makewell was featured. This interview captures Makewell creating pieces and discussing his feeling about his upcoming pop-up show curated by MAD gallery on April 9th.

The legendary country western singer/songwriter Merle Haggard died at the age of 79 on April 6th 2016 after battling pneumonia for several months. But that doesn’t mean the world won’t get new music from the music icon.

He has left behind several hundred unreleased songs for his adoring fans. He spoke with Broadways Electric Barnyard about his personal archives of songs “probably 300, 400 songs that I haven’t released that I’ve collected over the years.”

No longer are music fans held by a string as artists slowly promote new music. Within the last couple of years, the music industry has transitioned from an extended promotional to an instantaneous body of work that can constantly be grown with just the click of a button.

Just a few days before the release of their first EP together, Jhene Aiko and Big Sean would release clips of a music video for a single of their EP, “Memories Faded.” As the two promoted the April 1 release on Instagram through mysterious videos and album covers, their past collaborations represent a template that would be duplicated in their work as Twenty88.

Dump Trump “Bowel Movement” Spreading Across America

Local New York Artist Jota Te, displays in Warde Nasse Gallery in Soho, his Gorillas in Suits installation, a political statement regarding Wall Street corruption.

With the primary season upon us, potential voters are voicing their opinions on which candidates they support via digital and face to face word of mouth. But, when it comes to having an opinion on someone, no one is more polarizing than businessman and Republican front runner Donald Trump.

Many of New York City’s urban artists have been hitting the streets and galleries painting murals and canvases to send a message of opposition for Trump. One artist in particular has used his popularity to create a new movement — one he satirically calls the “Dump Trump Bowel Movement.” And from the look of the support he is getting from his peers and the public alike, this campaign to rid the political world of the former Apprentice star may actually gain momentum just in time for the general election.

“It’s not politics, it’s common sense,” said prankster and political artist Hanksy, the leader of the movement.

This Week in TV… The Most Unfair Review of Fuller House You’ll Ever Read

When I was in Middle School, it seemed like almost every time I flipped on the TV, Full House was on. I liked the wholesome Tanner family a lot as a 13 year old, but eventually I realized there was much better TV to watch and literally never gave the show a second thought.

That was until rumors started swirling recently that Netflix was releasing Fuller House, basically a spin-off of the original Full House with the same plot and most of the same characters and their catch phrases.

This Week In TV: Archer Returns

(Let me just preface this by saying that no, I’m not on FX’s payroll. They just make such high quality TV that I find myself posting about their shows week in and week out. If I end up doing a post about American Horror Story at some point, I’ll start it with the same disclaimer. But simply put, FX has some of the best shows on TV right now.)

The obnoxious, disgusting, annoying, and hilarious Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) returned to his spy-bro ways this past Thursday, March 31st, for an 8th season of unbridled animated debauchery. It’s kind of FX’s version of Family Guy, an offensive but hilarious cartoon for adults. Archer is about the titular hero’s antics as head spy of his mother’s spy organization, and it’s probably the dirtiest cartoon you’ll ever watch. Full of drinking, sex, offensive language and themes, it also happens to be pretty funny.

Another Take: Kendrick Lamar is Untitled, But Still A Master

In the wake of Kanye West’s artistic psychodrama comes a left-field Kendrick Lamar surprise album drop this Friday. Thank goodness.

The eight tracks off of untitled unmastered were mostly recorded during the To Pimp a Butterfly sessions in late 2014, and provide a fascinating insight into Lamar’s creative process. Interestingly, the title of each song is dated according to when it was recorded. The title of the album is clever in itself, nodding at Lamar’s concerns of freedom as well as the nature of his new music– not as lavish as TPAB, but yet the details in each song grasps listeners.

Lamar shows his most playful side on untitled unmastered in comparison to all of his previous works — which is probably where the “unmastered” portion of the release comes into play. Adding these songs on TPAB would not have necessarily improved it, as none of the eight tracks are blockbusters. The hooks lack power yet somehow everything flows effortlessly, and Lamar’s talent for lyricism prevails in every track.

The release comes on the heels of a Twitter exchange between James, Lamar and Anthony Tiffith, the CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment — Lebron asked Lamar and Tiffith to release new music by Lamar that never made it on TPAB. And the new content signals a plain and simple truth when it comes to social media and the superstar who frequent it:

What LeBron James wants, LeBron James gets.
