Waiting for GODOT

Waiting for Godot is about two men waiting for Godot in a random place near to a tree, Estragon and Vladimir meet near to a tree and while they waiting for Godot they converse about different topics, in the play enter two others men Pozzo and Lucky how was in his to sell Lucky how was his slave. He stops for a while to talked with Vladimir and Estragon, Lucky internment them by dancing.

This plays in kind of confusing because we don’t know why they waiting for Godot and for what they are waiting for him? One of the main statement that they made was when Estragon was pull of his boots and Estragon said, “Nothing to be done.” (Beckett 1) he can refer to he can pull off his boot or his lives or how the human condition is structure in the society.

In the play one of the topic that they discuss was about the bible story the two thieves, they discuss if one of them was saved or not. Vladimir agreed with point of view of the bible but Estragon contradict Vladimir opinions about it, when Estragon asked Vladimir who believes is one of the thief was saved and Vladimir said everybody, Estragon said, “People are bloody ignorant apes.” (Beckett 5) Estragon options show the unhappy status of humanity in the play.

Vladimir and Estragon waiting for hours in that place and I believe that they don’t even know how Godot look like because when Pozzo enter to the play, they though that he was Godot. Something I believe that they forgot for what they are there. Vladimir and Estragon when they see Lucky they started to examine him but they don’t are familiar with his pain and he let Pozzo to mistreat him.

At the end of the act one a boy came to tell Vladimir and Estragon that Godot can’t make that evening that tomorrow he going to be there. After all that waiting Godot never show up but a least now we know that Godot is real because in play is seem that Godot was some imaginary person that Estragon and Vladimir created. In the end of the play their decided to stay together but we don’t know what Godot do for living and how he look like. Why do you think Vladimir and Estragon want to meet with him?

  1. Great discussion and analysis! i do not know why they waiting for Godot even though he is not a God.
I think, there are millions interpretation behind this play such as emotional and psychological perspectives behind on this play. For example, Virmidir is a quite person was sleeping, but Estragan disturbs him and said go away from his life, but they did not move. they also say loneness is better than together, but they were together. your ending was good, representing that why they waiting for Godot although he was not a God.

  2. Ramon,
You do a great job analyzing the play and bring up some very interesting points. Godot’s role in the play is certainly very cryptic, as we are provided little information on his character. You also bring up an interesting question at the end, rather than asking who Godot is, you as why Estragon and Vladimir want to meet him.
Additionally you highlight a “main statement” here when you say, “One of the main statement that they made was when Estragon was pull of his boots and Estragon said, “Nothing to be done.” (Beckett 1) he can refer to he can pull off his boot or his lives or how the human condition is structure in the society.” Do you believe there is enough contextual evidence provided in the play to make this assumption? The play lacks the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea in which the influence of society can fully be identified and assessed. Furthermore, the characters themselves seem to have no concept of time; they are not sure of what day it is, if they had been there the day before, etc. Rather than looking at the bigger picture, I think it is important to narrow it down to each of the individual characters and their dialogue. You may find that each character has a self proclaimed purpose for being where they are, at that moment, and they are responsible for their own actions. This is a very existential way of thinking; each individual acts freely and willingly, without any outside influences, ultimately determining how they progress when in a state of confusion or anticipation, often times finding meaning in things and situations that are meaningless. Perhaps this helps us understand why the characters feel obligated to meet Godot!

  3. This is is a philosophical play with very deep meaning to criticize the religious. The two chracters waiting for the Godot “God” and and they do not knew where and when they can met him. Pozzo who violate can be human and the boy who claim to be the messenger of Godot and has an other brother who is also messenger could be Moses and Jouses. This is how I did interpreted this play.

  4. The reference you made regarding the bibles’ 4 thieves story where one was forgiven is very interesting as it reveals the contrasting disposition of Estragon and Vladamir. Estragon has shown traits of being pessimistic and a cup half empty kind of guy whereas Vladamir is more optimistic and cup half full. Together they balance each other out and seem like the collective whole cup of water. But what is this cup of water to do and I feel that this is the struggle they are facing. They are them and just came to be in their world as their perspective is limited to what is only known to them. They want answers greater than that and that is why they are caught in this limbo of waiting for Godot because they just don’t know what to do with their existence.
