Journal 5, Personal Entry 3 HTRG

All we need to travel in the realm of virtual communication is a laptop and cable connection. With these tools, individuals can participate actively and pay close attention to most happenings of their interest. Though lacking of a figurative authority to regulate and monitor most of the online communication, there are still certain rules and regulation that we have to observe so as to be responsible digital citizens.

 

In my opinion, a responsible digital citizenship requires that its participants to make sensible comments and thoughts when stating their opinions. For example, a responsible digital citizen will carefully draft his or her argument on a controversial matter so as not to be portrayed as too assertive or orthodox. Moreover, a sensible digital citizen will also avoid making comments which threatens and weakens the social fabrics, and causing unnecessary troubles. Surely the Constitution protects the freedom of speech, but as Voltaire observed centuries earlier that “ common sense is not so common,” many participants assumed that they are legally protected freely express whatever their thoughts and opinions, without having to worry about the consequences of their speech. Thus, a responsible digital citizenship also involves critically thinking skills, a critical factor that many lack of.
