Reading Huck Finn is an unique experience for me. Intially, I was confused by the colloquial dialogue and the frequent usage of Southern dialects by many Huck Finn’s characters. As a non-English native speaker, I at times have to second guess and read through once more to clarify my doubts.Such confusion has not only lead to misinterpertation of the author’s ideas and thoughts, but it also slows down my reading speed.Nevertheless,Huck Finn still has plenty of thought-provoking examples.
In the novel, I was astonished to learn how Pap, Huck Finn’s father, treated Finn and other people, especially his deep-rooted racism against the a specific ethnicity. Not only using degorative terms to address the group, Pap also resort to physically vent his anger on Huck Finn by violently kicking Finn at times. Worst still, Pap is a serious alchoholic who will resort to all means to get money for a drink.
Through out the story, Supersition is an omnipresent element as Finn still firmly believe that some super-natural beings have already determined his fate.
