Journal #11

First thought upon finishing the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the shocking news that Jim was free this whole time. Miss Watson, the original owner of Jim, had died months back and in her will she freed Jim. The whole adventure Huck and Jim had trying to get Jim to freedom was all in vain because Jim was already free. And Tom knowing all of this, and yet plans a devious and adventurous attempt to get Jim away from his uncle and aunt, just shows how adventure hungry Tom really is.

The second thought includes Huck and his morality. The Huck from the start of the novel isn’t the same at the end of novel. In the beginning of the novel, Huck tends to have an immature side to him. He doesn’t understand the concept of what is right and what is wrong and this goes one step further when he puts the snake in Jim’s bed and Jim ends up getting bit by it. But by the end of the novel, you can actually see the change in Huck. His decision to tell Mary about the hidden money shows how mature Huck has gotten. And for Huck to overlook all the fraudulent things the King and Duke contributed in and to feel sorry for their punishment is evident enough that his mind has matured from a boy into a man.

And one last thing, the Confluence Assignment, where we combined three hash-tag themes and came up with a scene within the novel that reflected all three themes was a clever assignment. It forced us look at every scene in the novel from the prospective of those three themes. It was a little frustrating to find a scene, but we ended up finding one anyways.
