Blog 6: Project Proposal

The title of my project proposal is a documentary called “The truth About Record Labels: How Record Deals Really Work”. This short film describes the struggles Artists face in the industry behind the scenes while they shine in the limelight. Record labels know that if the have complete control over the artist, they can use that control to manipulate the fans. Many artists fall into the trap thinking they need a record label when in reality the record label needs them because it is an opportunity to profit off them.

In my essay I will provide examples of different tactics Record Labels use to enslave their artists and create the illusion that their artists are successful when they are actually in debt. Labels will set rules to their favor at your demise. If you don’t end up becoming a superstar their is no 401k to save you: you will be shelved or dropped because you will be considered as a bad investment.j

  1. I think the documentary you’re using as a basis for the essay is an interesting topic. The music industry is a large part of many individuals’ lives, so having insight into this industry from a deeper/darker angle is definitely intriguing. The thesis statement that you came up with is both engaging and attractive. Overall, I believe that you have a great topic and thesis statement that sets you up with many potential talking points.

  2. You can unpack a lot about the music industry in your essay. You can talk about both perspectives, from a music artist and a record label point of view. This is an intriguing topic as many think artists have control of their music when in reality, the record label has majority control.

  3. You chose a really interesting topic to write about because a lot of it is not common general knowledge so I think it could educate a lot of people about the truth of the music industry and these labels.

  4. I think the direction and base of your paper seem to be really solid as of now which is a good sign for your paper. The behind the scenes of the music industry, like so many, is not perfect, especially when profit is put above the artist and their artistic freedom. Writing on that will be interesting and insightful for many as they learn how these companies work and what many artists sacrifice in trying to follow their passion. It’ll be interesting how you end up writing this paper!

  5. I really like the scope of this topic. It’s super specific but I think you’ll easily fill the page count. Be sure to analyze the documentary but branch off into other sources as well–it would be particularly interesting to hear a history of recent developments and changes in the music industry, and how where we are now is so staggeringly different than where we were ten years ago.
