The type that is used for this specific design is using the contrast in weight and size to achieve gaining attentions of people passing by. The short slogan they have written on the bottom, “see coffee differently,” plays into the design of the logo very well too. At first glance, this seems to be an outline of glasses on a man, which would go hand in hand with the “see” part in the slogan, but a further analysis shows that its actually two coffee cups.

The type used for this design is rather simple: FedEx. What has always attracted me to this design is the largeness and boldness of the font used for the design. The subtlety of aligning the ‘E’ and the ‘x’ in the right way also shows an arrow depicted by the negative space (implying that they are always on the move). Although this is a simple design, the size and weight of the text make this design look full.

This sign for myWayCup shows so many different types within one design board that it grabbed my attention instantly. Though there are different types on the board, the emphasis on myWayCup is shown through its individuality in the arrow. The arrow that holds the store name is thicker and is laid out in a perfect horizontal manner, whereas all the other arrows are tilted.

The type on this magazine spread if simple, yet explosive. It’s a very simple font with simple letter spaces, but its boldness in being places so close to the emphasis of the image (the face) is what works in this design.

Lastly, this design includes multiple texts in different types. It seems a bit messy and distracting, but the type is used nicely when having the word “smoky” blurred out behind the “NAKED” name. It adds emphasis as to what this product is and what it’s intended to do.

Illustrated Quote – Sejin Katie Im

The typeface that I’ve chosen for this project was Century Expanded. I chose this font because it contained the drama that I needed a font to have to go along with the quote and the image. I was debating between Century Expanded and Bodoni, but concluded that I wanted the font to be symmetrical and equally weighed, in the sense that Bodoni has a greater contrast in the thick and thin relationship weight. What I tried to do with the quote and the image is to work with the loud, black image of the mountain, contrasted by the light airy sky, and implant a strict, but light, quote on the sky. I wanted to play around with the heaviness of the quote with the light sky, contrasted to the lack of words on the stark image of the mountains. What I learned through this assignment was that design takes in a lot more aspects of that I assumed would just be copy a picture and add words to it. This assignment had me realize that designers put into account the different aspects of the image, the contrast in colors of the image and font, the font itself, etc when designing something.

Trace your name

For this project, I chose Baskerville. Honestly, I chose Baskerville because I thought it seemed easy… I was very wrong. I realized that this font had hidden curves everywhere and that serifs are harder to draw than I had assumed. I learned that the font had a slight thick and thin relationship for some letters that seemed either unrecognizable at a glance or the relationship looked so great that I decided to heighten the differences. I learned to be EXTREMELY patient throughout this project. Yeah, it was a straight forward assignment, but I got so meticulous in doing this assignment that I caught myself measuring all the sides of the letter to try to keep the measurement sizes in my head, while I commenced in drawing it free-handedly.

I think the hardest thing about this project was determining the spacing between the letters. Though the words “KATIE THE WICKED” don’t seem too difficult, I had to use multiple tracing papers to determine how I was going to space out the ‘AT’ in KATIE and “IC” in WICKED. Whenever I wrote out those two letters next to each other, they seemed too far and weird, especially because of the serifs sticking out. The ‘A’  in KATIE still looks off to me, but I’ve tried my best.

Expressive words

Sejin Katie Im

The version of Helvetica I used was Helvetica Neue Ultra Light. I initially approached designing the words by making the words be expressive and design-like, which we were taught not to do. Soon after, I caught my mistake and transitioned into searching for the correct Helvetica font that’ll express the definition of the word. For certain words, I wanted to emphasize a letter that I thought would give the word a bit more feeling(?). For example, in my final piece of the word “romantic,” I opted to enlarge the ‘a’ because it was conveying a romantic feel to me. The movement of the letter, negative spaces around the letter, the slimness of the letter, all led me to think that the letter ‘a’ seemed romantic enough to emphasize.

Through this project, I learned the different elements to a font and its specific type and that a font that’s tweaked just a little can make a big difference. I’ve always assumed that a font was just what it was, without any variations. This project definitely opened my eyes in learning about the different variations that come with a font and their significances. This project also made me appreciate Helvetica. I’ve assumed it was just a simple font without any thick and thin relationship, but blowing up each letter up, playing with the font, made me realize that Helvetica was a lot more intricate in details than I had known.

What is Graphic Design

Sejin Katie Im

This article definitely opened up my mind on the different ways that graphic design, communication design, attributes to society. Whenever I’ve thought of graphic design, I’ve only assumed that it was only related to designing a webpage. However, this article helped me realize that there is SO much more to graphic design than that. It also opened up my narrow minded thinking of assuming that jobs within this field was limited to only one thing: a graphic designer. Knowing a friend who ended up pursuing a job as a graphic designer, I caught myself pondering upon the question of “what can you really do with graphic design?” Well, according to the article, there are tons of jobs available. This article definitely broadened my spectrum of what a graphic design major can pursue to do.

A question that I wanted to ask the author while reading this article is if she thinks that it would be a safe route in pursuing a career in the graphic design department. I think the answer would be yes, in that there are so many job opportunities available in the department, and so many varieties too!
