Quotation

I chose the quote i did for a few reasons but i really think its a motivational quote for that being the main reason i chose it.  What i learned most about this assignment was that the placement of the quote really matters with the actual interpretation of the quote.  I knew that i needed find the right background that goes with the quote but initially i didn’t think too much as far as placement of the quote.  I initially put the quote towards the center of the picture wanting to go for a simple look but with feedback i realized i needed to i find the perfect spot for the quote so that its not just random words placed on the photo but so the actual meaning of the quote can translate throughout, along with the appropriate image as the background.

Quotation

In this project, I learned the importance of simplicity and details. For the quotation project, I started out with a street art image of Banksy called “Shop Till You Drop”. Initially, I wanted to isolate the image of the falling girl, its  shadow, and shopping cart. As I was fixing the image through photoshop, I realized that the image was not a strong representative of the quote I chose. I looked over my other options and came across one photo with an orphaned girl praying. The image struck me for it demonstrated the art of poverty. The street art was perfectly created with the proper color palette, but despite its perfection it represented the struggles of less fortunate children who live in the streets. The contrast between the perfection of the street art and the imperfections of life was appealing to me. For the typeface, I used Baskerville in white and in all caps. I tried to experiment on the quotation by using different colors and placements, but I realized that the I didn’t want the font to distract the image.

Quotation Analysis

At the start of the project, I chose a quote that resonated with me and then looked at key words and chose pictures based off of those words. When trying to decide the placement of the pictures, I paid attention to whether or not the pictures followed a certain direction or not. I also experimented with font color and judged to see if it worked well the meaning of the picture and quote. At the end of this project, I learned that different pictures can affect the interpretation of the quote. In one page, I used Calvin and Hobbes with a Baskerville font for the quote, which I felt brought back memories of reading picture books. In another page, I used a background picture of a road that bled off the pages with the same font family. However, I felt that the second page gave off a more motivational feeling rather than a nostalgic one. Thus, I believe that using a picture can greatly emphasize/change the quote meaning that goes along with it.

Quotation-Peter Pan

When sketching ideas , my mind kept going to Peter Pan and using Peter Pan related images. It was hard for me to get away from the idea of using the images that the quote derived directly from. I also realized a lot of the ideas I had were then improved upon once I started transferring ideas from my sketch to inDesign. After the sketches, I liked the one that was the simplest and that didn’t have any images related to Peter Pan. I ended up trying typefaces such as Helvetica and Garamond and in the end used Garamond as my typeface. I tried Helvetica but it did not express the right emotion that the quote was expressing. I also played around with the position of the text as well as which direction the text will be read from.

In this project, I became more comfortable with using inDesign and I am happy to say that I also learned a little of Photoshop as well.

Quotation Analysis

For the quotation assignment, I had to think of a quote that spoke to me on a personal level, and I felt the perfect one would be “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”, stated by Wayne Gretzky. I then had to figure out what to sketch as a representation of this quote, so I decided to focus my sketches on sports, such as basketball, hockey, and dart-throwing. I ended up using one of my sketches for my project by scanning it into the computer, and working around it from there. I used the Baskerville typeface to write out my quote, and I learned how creative you can be with representation of something, such as a quote.

Expressive Words

During the process of doing this project, I tried three main approaches to design the words. Since we can only use the typeface Helvetica, which is very neat and simple, I focus on using spacing, angling and the meaning of the words when designed. For example, the word “silly”, I placed the word in the center with a solid black color and repeated some parts of the words and made them different level of grey and angled them in various to create a silly and messy background. I tried to make a contrast by using the color in order to make the word “silly” in the middle stand out more. However, on piece of advice I got when we discussed our works, it actually would look more create if I took out the word in the middle. I think this approach is more creative and  illustrate the meaning of the word “silly” more. Two things I learned from this project are how a little twit on the word can make a simple typeface more interesting and meaningful and how to experiment different designs through different techniques such as spacing and angling.

Expressive Words

For this project, the only typeface that was used is Helvetica. I had two approaches for this project. We had a lot of limitations, for this project, therefore, I went to two extreme sides. My first approach was to apply all the skills and made all my designs look very complicate. Second one was keeping them nice and simple. But in the end, I preferred second approach. I learned many things from this project, not just know how to use InDesign, but how to think as a designer. Also, I really like the idea of keeping designs nice and simple, and I enjoyed the whole process of bring sketches in to digital design.

Expressive Words

For my design approach, the interpretation of each word is based on my perception by using both uppercase and lowercase letters, letter spacing, angles, big and small typefaces, and black and gray tints. For each word, comprehensibility and visibility are important, because you would like the viewer to still be able to read the word. In page one, the word strict is placed in a descending order, in which each letter becomes smaller. My interpretation of the word means hierarchy and dictatorship, in which each person, in this case letter, has a superior. In this case, the letter S is the “dictator” of all by imposing strict laws. Similar to page two, the next five letters are inside the big typeface S to demonstrate that a person dominates and leads everyone else. In page three, each letter in the word quiet gets smaller as a contrast to how sound becomes less audible. For page four, quiet means complete silence by placing a strikethrough between the word. In pages five and six, the word silly bleeds outside the page to show that being silly means being playful by hiding. In the next page, silly also means being all over the place. For the word elegant, I want each word to represent sophisticated and simple. For the word romantic, I interpret it as partnership with the letters R and C. For the last page, romantic is equivalent to being in a relationship, in which being in one should not be a burden. As you can see, the letter R is upside down with the remaining letter on top which shows burden. In this project, I learned that words can be interpreted in various ways, and that the design doesn’t need to be overbearing. Through expressive words, you are able to convey your message in a simple manner.

Expressive Words

For this project we used only helvetica. I tried to take two approaches to the project. The first, keep it simple and the second, learn a lot! I attempted at making circles and using the gradients etc. However, I found that by the end my favorite words were the one’s I kept the most clean and simple, almost crisp. I had to relook at each of them and make sure I didn’t question their meaning and that each made sense. I learned a lot from this project and I really liked sticking to the guidelines, I felt it forced me to be even more creative and clearer.
