Displacement In Popular Culture

Everybody Hates Chris – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1OFmvmEnLw

Chris’ first middle school that he attended was in the area of his residence and majority Black people, but it was bad. After realizing this, his parents decided to transfer him to a predominantly White middle school. At this middle school, he is one of the only very few Black students who gets beat up and treated negative based on his race. Chris does not fit in, but he manages to get through it.

Displacement In Popular Culture

  • Happy Feet- Mumble is rejected in and kicked out of his colony because he is the only one that can not sing. He is only good at tapping with his feet and they blame his dancing on the shortage of food.  Below is the link to the scene where Mumble gets kicked out of his colony.

  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes- Caesar is an ape that had human characteristics due to being tested on in trying to find the cure to Alzheimer’s disease. In doing so, he is kept locked away and can only interact his family. Since he is an animal placed in an environment where only humans belong Caesar struggles in feeling free which is why he along with other apes, decide to break free and create their own home. I wasn’t able to find the particular clip that I wanted but below is a clip of when Caesar rejects the offer of going back to his human “home” and stays with his fellow apes in the forest.

Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz Trailer

In this film, Nicholas Angel is a hotshot cop who strives to be the best of the best. In doing so, he ends up being so good that he causes the entire London police force to look bad. Therefore, he gets reassigned to the safest town in the U.K. Angel now has to adapt to going from a crime-filled urban area to, quite literally, the safest town in the country. Angel now faces a displacement in his new surroundings where he no longer fits in due to his extensive experience he cannot apply. I think this properly applies to the “fish out of water” formula since Angel now has to adapt in a new environment that’s different than what he is used to in order to fit in.

Homework for Monday, March 28th: Displacement in Popular Culture

Today in class, we watched two short clips from Superman  and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.  Both clips followed roughly the same basic structure.  In each, the son is sent away from home by his parents and finds himself in a new and unfamiliar place.  In both narratives, the protagonist has to figure out how to manage in a place where he does not fit in.  Your homework for Monday is to find a piece of popular culture that follows this basic “fish out of water” structure.  It could be a tv show, movie, song, video, cartoon, etc….   All that the designation “popular culture” means is that is it designed for a mass audience.  Once you’ve chosen your “text,” post a short, representative clip from it or a link to it here on the blog, together with a description of the text and an explanation of how you see it conforming to the model we saw in Superman and The Fresh Prince.  If you have any questions about this assignment, please contact me.

Essay #2

I chose to use On The Rainy River by Tim O’Brien and prompt number one to write my literary analysis essay because after looking over the story again more carefully I i realize that Tim’s transition from scholar to going into the army was very interesting. He has an internal debate whether he will flee the army and his american life or go to to war, and which of these choices will or will not make him a coward. This story is really relatable and I feel an essay about this would be a fascinating experience to write.

Essay 2

For Essay 2 I decided to chose prompt #2 and write about “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere”. After thinking about the title for some time, I believe that the title plays a deeper role than it seems. Dina growing up with an abusive father and losing her mother all fit into the theme of loneliness and relates to the title. In my paper, I am going to talk about how the title can make us feel pity towards Dina.

Second Essay

For my Literary Analysis essay, I chose the first prompt and I will be using the short story “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere.” We all make a transition or transitions in our lives. And in this short story, Dina goes through a huge transition in her life as she enters adulthood. In this essay, I will speak upon this transition as she goes through this rough transition being anti social, a loner, and very confused about sexual orientation. I will also try to speak upon her relationship with Heidi and the significance this relationship had on her transition.

Essay #2

I will be writing my second essay on “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” using the first prompt. I will be writing about Dina’s transition from high school in a rough area to a prestigious university while exploring the meaning as well as factors in her transition. This includes going from being a “child” to an “adult” as well as exploring her sexuality.

Essay #2

For my second essay, I’ve decided to do the first prompt on “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere”. In this story, we’ve encountered few characters that are transitioning. Specifically in “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere”, Dina the main character is going through a transition herself. I would be using themes and analyzing the character herself in order to find the meaning and significance of her displacement. Over the course of the narrative (Dina), I can also speak about her relationship with her family and her friend Heidi and how those relationships made a part of her experience into adulthood.
