Due: 03/28/16, Jackie Chan Adventures

For the assignment I have chosen  ‘Jackie Chan Adventures’. This cartoon was perfect for the idea of displacement due to the fact of it being about regular people that are displaced because of their secrets and/or talents. For the Chan’s they have the secret of knowing about a higher realm where evil resides and they also have the talent of their ancient form of fighting. Also, we can take it as these evil spirits that Jackie and his family have to keep fending off, as being displaced when they come to the real world/earth.

Displacement in Popular Culture

The opening scenes in “The 100” shows how humans were displaced due to a world war. The only place habitable was space so they were forced to move there. However, as punishment, Clark and other prisoners are displaced and sent back to the ground as their punishment to see if the Earth is survivable.

Displacement in Pop Culture media

Diary of a Wimpy kid is about a kid, entering middle school. The kid has no idea of what to expect from his transition to high school. His older brother makes him think that middle school will be a horrible experience in order to scare him. This relates to Super and The Fresh Prince in that the person is introduced to a foreign area where he does not know the people nor do they know of him.

In the series “Breaking Bad”, the protagonist, Walter White is a high school chemistry teacher who has  been diagnosed with stage III lung cancer. To ensure the financial prosperity of his family, White decides to make and sell crystal meth with his former high school student, Jesse Pinkman. This series follows the displacement route because Walter White is now in the world of crime and drugs. Here is a trailer of “Breaking Bad”.

Invader Zim

For this assignment I chose Invader Zim as my text. In this short clip, Zim is sent on a mission from planet Irk to take over the planet. Once he arrives he begins to notice how weird the human race was and tries to fit in while figuring out the best method of conquering them. This text goes along with the Superman and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air clips by demonstrating how a character from a different setting adapts and tries to fit in a place they never been to.

Freaky Friday (2003)

In the 2003 film “Freaky Friday” starring Lindsay Lohan(Anna Coleman) and Jaime Lee Curtis(Tess), Anna is constantly always fighting with her family,  especially her mother since neither of them can seem to get along due to a lacking understanding between the two. Anna, a high school student who is in a Punk-Rock band, believes that her mother has the perfect life because she is a successful therapist and writer who makes a lot of money and doesn’t have to deal with the high school drama she deals with. Similarly, Tess thinks that Anna has it better because she doesn’t have to deal with the stress that comes with adulthood. She also believes this because she thinks that all she does is waist her time creating “noise” with her band. It isn’t until  their souls are switched due to an enchanted Chinese fortune cookie that they are able to switch roles for a day (bodies) and form more of an understanding between the two. This film shows displacement in that both Anna and Tess switch lives on a Friday and are forced to adapt to a new school/job, new acquaintances, new responsibilities, new obstacles, and new dramas that are not a part of their usual everyday .

Mean Girls

In the movie “Mean Girls”, the main character Cady moved from Africa to the suburbs of Illinois to start a new life. Throughout the movie, there were two major displacements that were depicted. One displacement was Cady moving from one country (Africa) to another (America) that she had to adapt to regarding the living lifestyle, the people, etc. Another displacement was being home-schooled till she moved to her new home and had to go to a high school where she had to adjust to the  American public school system and the different cliques that existed in the school.  In the small, the popular girl (Regina) is intrigued by Cady and is introducing her to the new terms that Cady is not familiar with and the dress/color code that Cady has to abide to and so forth.
