TARTUFFE 4-5

“Quiet you! I see you standing there. Don’t speak a single word! Don’t even dare!” (Moliere, 181) We can see how Orgon is a conservative, old-fashioned man through many of his conversations throughout Act 1. He didn’t accept advice from anybody in his family except his mother who is also conservative. Consequently, he put himself into big troubles. This shows how conservative and ignorant breadwinner can lead whole family members astray.

In this Chapter, Tartuffe exposes the fraudulence of his activities. “Don’t count on it; trust me, he’ll find a way to use these weapons you gave him today. He has legal documents, and the deed.” (Moliere,191) Orgon was beguiled of all of his money. Many people, including the son and the maid, actually keeps telling Orgon the truth but he does not listen, and gives everything to Tartuffe.

When Orgon realizes that Tartuffe is a religious hypocrite, it is too late for him to get back on the right track. “It’s just a warrant saying we can seize, Not me, of course, but this Monsieur Tartuffe- Your house and land as his. Here is the proof. I have the contract here. You must vacate. There premises. Please, now, don’t be irate. Just gather up your things now, and make way for this man, without hindrance or delay.” (Moliere, 192) The one wrong decision from the breadwinner can drive every member of the family into disaster.
