ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Karen Leonardo Reading Response 10/11

  1.  Coates focuses on what is left out of a movie he enjoys because he noticed the slight changes in events that were apart of the movie. The historical events that he has known for so long were slightly changed in the movie making the children who watch these movies believe the surface of the events, not the full thing. Coates focuses on what is left out because he had been a big fan of the X-men movies, he had been watching them way before his son has which means he is well educated on the plot of the movies. He notices the changes of the new movies that have came out and how they only cover the surface of the events making his son believe these things happened how the movies showed them to happen. He states, “I am reminded of whole swaths of this country where historical fiction compels Americans to claim the Civil War was about states’ rights, minus the “right to own people” part.” The movie excluded one of the most important events in history which was a reason for the Civil War, the right to own people. The children watching these movies will not know the correct history of these events which is not right.
  2. A contrast I noticed in’No Man’s Sky’ was the age difference in the author Ta-Nehisi Coates and his son. Coates states he came of age in the 80’s and 90’s which means he must have been in his teens or pre teens. While on the other hand his son is 10 years old. This is important in this analysis because people experience and learn things differently when they are at a certain age. Coates clearly states that he noticed the changes the movie “First Class” made to the movie, he noticed how many small details were excluded from certain events in the movie. The age difference is significant here because that is something his 10 year old son would not catch. To his son this is another superhero/villain movie, when in reality to Coates it is a movie that is very historical to him. Coates says, “This is all about knowing your audience.” He says that because the movie knew that their audience would be children who were in their teens and not properly educated on said events yet. However, those people who were educated did catch the slight differences like Coates.
