The Rubin Museum

My favorite workshop I went to for Freshman Seminar was the trip to the Rubin Museum. Before the trip I had walked by the museum a few times and I had always wanted to go in. This class finally gave me the chance. I love learning about art and the history the is involved with it. Up until the trip, most of my knowledge on art history had been on European art. I really liked this trip because it exposed me to art that I had never really learned about. I found it really interesting that the the museum had previously been a tenement building and then a department store. The way the owners converted the store to the museum looked really cool. Another part of the workshop that I enjoyed was the way the tour was led by a Baruch student. I thought the art in the museum was also really cool. The sculptures were fascinating. I wish I got to learn more about the history behind each piece though. The meditation room was very interesting. It was dark with a lot of candles and figures of Buddha. I can see why people would want that kind of peaceful atmosphere to meditate.

I liked all the workshops though because they exposed me to things I wouldn’t otherwise have experienced. The News Literacy seminar was interesting because it taught me not to trust everything you hear or see in the media. Voices was fun because it taught me about my peers. My favorite part of these seminars ultimately was bonding with my fellow students.

My favorite enrichment workshop was Baruch Voices. I was not really interested in the News Literacy Workshop and the Rubin Museum.  I liked it for many reasons. First of all, I believe the monologues were well-written, organized, and performed really well. I was able to put myself in the narrator’s place and pretend I was in their situation no matter what it was. At first I was just thinking that it would be super boring and that I would not really like it but it turned out to be one of my coolest experiences here at Baruch College. Another thing I liked was the environment. While the monologues were being performed I was so relaxed and calm. It gave you a chance to get away from the busy environment when going to class or traveling in the busy city. Even though I was falling asleep I still was attentive and enjoyed it. I believe I covered all of the reasons as to why I liked Baruch Voices, now I’m just trying to make the word count. My overall experience with Freshman Seminar was a pretty cool and interesting experience. Although I did not really speak up in conversations, I’ve learned a lot about my fellow classmates.

Make Up Blog

An event that changed my life was deciding to go to college.  At first i didn’t want to go.  I signed up late, slacked on my SAT’s and all throughout high school and still made it here last minute.  I guess that was a sign that i should pursue a higher education.  It changed my life because I’m sure i would be doing different things and such if i had not gone to college such as nothing.

Voices

I did not want to be a part of voices.  Like Anthony i wanted to sign in and leave.  I do not really appreciate acting nor do I want to hear the other voices of Baruch.  Just kidding.  It was pretty decent and the Asian guy had the funniest interpretation of everyone.  He reminds me of Harold from Harold and Kumar.

My first semester was not everything i thought it would be because it was better.  It was better because i expected classes to be harder but i still found time to slack and do well.  I hate all the reading and attendance rules.  I like playing basketball and how short the semester felt.  I did not join any clubs/sports/activities.  My commute was decent.  I am staying in Baruch.

The Mishkin Gallery

Our visit to the photography exhibit on women in jazz was my favorite FRO event. It was quite nice to visit something artistically inclined at Baruch, because one can so easily forget that there is more to the Baruch culture beyond the business academia. The curator had a visible passion for the gallery and enjoyed having students visit. This welcoming atmosphere doubled with actual photographs themselves cast a aura of delight on me as a viewer. Jazz itself is very lively and freeing whether it be a display of joyful, lovestruck or melancholy emotion. The photographers really captured this so that even a simple photo can resonate it back to a viewer. Examining and “feeling” the art, I was transformed from a third person viewpoint into that of a seccond or even first person experience. I was unable to go to the Mishkin Gallery with our own LC16, and had to go with another freshman seminar group. The interesting thing I noticed was the group dynamic. Each of these little groups have such a strong sense of community that without a closer look one can easily mistake that these peers have known each other for a long time. I am happy to have bonded with our class. From strangers to friends, we have had a lot of good times exploring Baruch and college life.

workshops

My favorite workshop was Baruch voices. I really enjoyed Baruch voices because i got to heard what my fellow peers had to say and how they really felt. Although i did not know the people whose speech it was, i felt like i got to better understand all of my fellow classmates. This was definitely a positive experience because it showed me to not just look at  people as people but as human beings who have gone through more than i could ever imagine. I have seen people walking the halls at Baruch and instead of just walking past i can now look at them in the face, and not see their face but a person behind it waiting to be discovered. That is why my favorite workshop was Baruch voices.

my first semester

This picture represents my first semester in college because i did not find it as difficult as i thought it would be. I got really nervous my first week of school hearing stories of people failing out, studying 6 hours a night and other horror stories. Although many people told me this, i did not find it that difficult at all. maybe it is because i went to a prep school in New Jersey, but it came very easy to me. I have done all my work and have good grades with all being not so difficult. My first freshman semester was very enjoyable but it was not bad what so ever.

I chose a picture of a student holding a stack of books, because that is pretty much what college has been so far. I was not really used to the whole studying thing before i got here, but thats mostly what it is now. This first semester has definitely been a lot of work, and not having the greatest teacher definitely does not help that cause. Starting off the semester was slow, not much work at all but as the teachers realized we got comfortable they completely changed the pace. As it was getting closer to midterm the load became insane. There were so many overlapping assignments and everything began to pile up. Thankfully i got through it, with very satisfactory grades. Now its getting closer to final week, and the stress is definitely kicking in. Our english teacher handing out a research paper and another essay due a week later is definitely not helping. I got through it with midterms, so im sure i can do it again, just hoping for the best.

The Baruch Voices workshop was probably the one I’d call my favorite. I really enjoyed it because it came from the actual students that are currently in the same position as me. Listening to what other freshman had to say about their first semester allowed me to relate it to my own. It was also great because not only was it the voice of other freshman, but we got to hear a monologue from our own block. The presenters also made the experience a lot more enjoyable. The way they added the perfect tone to it made the monologues very entertaining to hear.
