Laura: NY Times, questions

1. The theme we selected for our presentation was smartphones. It is an easily universible and broad enough topic that it was fairly easy to find articles related to it. Our articles ranged from local to global issues, including: addiction, applications, recycling and the cell phones results or effects in other countries.
2. My role for the project was the bearcat post.
3. I do not believe that this project has had much influence on my understanding of “news literature.” I often read the newspaper during down time.

NYT Blog Post

1. The theme that my group chose for our front page was music because almost everyone listens to music or has listened to music at one point in their lives. The articles we selected fit this theme because they showed our individual interests in music.

2. My individual role in the project was an administrator like everyone else and I had to summarize an article that related to music in New York City.

3. This project did not really influence my understanding of “news literacy” because I only summarized one article and I’ve already been reading news articles from time to time.

Music in NYC

In not only New York City, but in all of America today, the popularity of electronic dance music, more commonly referred to as EDM, has been rapidly rising. In the article, “Drug Deaths Threaten Rising Business of Electronic Music Fests”, the use of MDMA in electronic music festivals is discussed. Since March, at least seven young individuals have died after overdosing on MDMA and other party drugs known as ecstasy or molly. As a result, the three-day Electric Zoo festival on Randall’s Island was shut down after the second day at the request of New York City officials after two individuals died. In America today, the rapid growth of drug-related deaths in electronic festivals has become a growing concern to many. Personally, as a fan of EDM and electronic festivals and concerts in general, it bothers me that one of my favorite hobbies is often tainted with the  words “drug misuse” and “immature young kids”. Why should others have to suffer because a few kids couldn’t handle themselves? Personally, I think that if you’re gonna take drugs at these festivals, at LEAST be responsible so you don’t ruin the party for everyone else.

NYT Questionnaire-Ariel

1. What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?

The theme of our group was food. It was easily agreeable since we can all relate and love food. Well I’m a huge fan of sushi so I personally searched for Japanese related articles. My article is on global effects and the articles just fell in place. Affected food globally.

2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?

Well I was the appointed leader so the only thing different I did was name the site and just add my fellow group members on to the site as admin. I also took some time to edit the page and a few post. My role was on global effects of food and I had my other group members choose upon national, local, and bearcat news.

3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?
Provide a link to your NYT Front Page Project.

Well I still strongly dislike newspaper and news in general, although I can appreciate it’s uses.

New York Times Project Q&A

1. What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?
The theme of our group’s New York Times Project was Medicinal Treatments after discussing the general interest of the four members, we all collectively agreed to focus our articles with the topic in mind. The article I selected fit within the theme since holistic medicine is an underrated approach to a human’s wellness and apparently has principles that would also benefit the world economy.
2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?
The individual role I took on working on the New York Times project was to find an article relating back to our topic on an international level.
3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?
My experience working within this project has influenced my understanding of “news literacy” since I’ve realized the New York Times slogan “All the News That’s Fit to Print” may contribute to there being almost no articles on an alternative to traditional medicine on an international scope expect one that was released on October 22nd, 2013 discussing how people now rely on international countries as a way of obtaining necessary prescriptions due to the outrageous costs in the United States.

Q&A: New York Times Project

1. What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?

The theme for my group is smartphones. When coming up with the topic, we were thinking about a concept that is constantly in our faces while appealing to the masses while being discussed. As soon as I pulled out my smartphone, I instantly said “smartphones” and it became our project topic. The articles fit with the theme as far as the progress that has been made throughout the world with smartphones and modern technology. It covers the benefits and power a simple smartphone can have at this point in time.

2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?

My specific role in this group project was to make the city-leveled article summary. Though I was not raised in any part of the state of New York, I’ve learned of many things that go on in the city and boroughs, during both my childhood and now, where smartphones and modern technology definitely gave me the upper hand in this particular task.

3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?

To be quite honest, my understanding of “news literacy” has not changed with this project experience. During my high school career, article summaries/reviews and the learning of current events was well-focused in all of my business courses. For this kind of project, my task was quite simple. If anything, it showed me new functions of New York City. It’s definitely changed since when I was younger and originated from such a large tourist spot.

Catalina Tapia: NYT Project

1.    What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?

– The theme my group selected for our front page was Music; we selected this theme because we are all music lovers and are very passionate about music today. The articles I selected fit into our theme because Electric Zoo is a New York based music festival and the Soulcats are all Baruch students.

2.    What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?

– My role in the process of the NYT project was to summarize one random New York Times Article and one Baruch Ticker article.

3.    How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?

– This project has influenced my understanding of “news literacy” because it has given me more understanding of how essential it is to stay informed about local city news since they have a greater impact on my life. Reading the Baruch news I realized how many activities go on throughout the day and how fellow Bearcats are leaving their paw print in history. I found that reading the weekly newspaper can be very helpful in understanding the college a lot better.

New York Times Project

1.What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?

The theme my group had chosen was food. We came to select food because it is one of the most general topics and everyone all over the world can relate to it. The articles all had to do with food on levels that were given to us. Ex: Global, local

2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?

I had been an administrator just like everyone else. One person needed to do two articles since we needed six and there were only five of us. So I had volunteered to do two “national” article posts.

3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?

I had enjoyed the project with my group and it led me to not only do the project itself but explore the New York Times websites and update myself on the latest news and I came to realize just how relevant it is to us college students.
