Tabassum Tasnim- Ad-Hoc Workshop

Last week on Thursday I a attended career workshop on Ad-Hoc majors. Entering college, I have no idea on what I wanted to do in the future, so I’m having a hard time picking a major. I attended this workshop because I found the list of majors on the Baruch website didn’t appeal to me much. So, the idea of being able to create your own major appealed to me greatly. The idea of being able to mix and match different majors to create a unique learning experience sounded very exciting to me. In the information session, Sandra Kupprat, who was leading the workshop, first gave us examples of Ad-Hoc majors created in the past. I was surprised to see the type of majors people were able to come up with, such as Film and Marketing. The Ad-Hoc application requires the applicant to submit a sound reasoning for the major. In the examples that I saw, even the craziest of majors had some type of logic behind them. The workshop also had past Baruch students who were Ad-Hoc majors. One of them is currently in medical school, and he was a Biochemistry major. He talked about his experience with the application. He said how it was super simple, and he thought that it helped him on his way to medical school because he was able to choose his own classes. There was also another alum that came who majored in marketing and music. He already had a music degree from another school, and he had come to Baruch for marketing.. He found that it wasn’t exactly what he was looking for, so he combined music and marketing for something that was unique for his own interests. After going to this workshop, I feel a little better about choosing a major because I know now that there are multiple other routes I can take other than the pre-made ones.
