Last Sunday I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After waiting on a short line to pay, I headed in to the museum. The first room I walked into was a huge, open white room filled with Roman statues. Many of these statues looked damaged and were missing arms or other appendages. For some reason quite a few statues were missing noses. This is probably a result of them being incredibly old and Rome being sacked quite a few times. I always wondered how much time it took to carve statues out of marble without modern technology. It seems like it would have taken forever just to carve a face.
After spending some time looking at the statues I headed into the other rooms and explored the museum. The ancient Greek art was mostly pottery. The pots were mostly black and orange and had people on the sides. The people would always be doing something or depicting a story. I didn’t spend much time looking at the Greek pottery as it was a bit boring. The next room I entered was a massive room made to look like a church. High up on the walls were flags of medieval families from western Europe. In the corner was a statue of the first pope, dressed in red robes with a red pointy hat on. He looked a bit like Santa.
The final room I went into was filled with medieval arms and armor. In the middle of the room stood three armored horses, two of them with mounted knights holding lances. There were quite a few full sets of armor at the exhibit. The detail on some of the armor was insane and completely impractical. There was one set that had lions carved into the entire breastplate. The helmets were interesting because they offered almost no sight for the wearer. All you would get is this small slit to look through as you went into battle.
