For my student life blog, I went to the fitness center. I went during my break for club hours. Usually during these hours I would be studying and doing homework. At first I thought 3(three) hours would be way too much to myself, but now I don’t think it’s enough. When one math homework takes 2(two) hours then it turns out that I don’t have any time to myself. Even at home I spend most of my time doing school work so as of recent I haven’t had the time to go to the gym. So when going to they gym could be used as assignment, I was really excited. I went to the Baruch Fitness center obviously in the basement of the Newman Vertical campus. I got there by taking the bus to the train station(Q43). The trains I took to get here where the F to the E to the 6. As I said before I went during my break which started at 12:00. At first I thought I had to move my bag around as I changed from machine to machine like I did by the gym at my home. I was surprised to see that I could rent out a locker, something I will definitely take advantage of in the future. The gym itself isn’t that great. It has a couple more machines than my local Y but the dumbbells and free weight were extremely worn out. I haven’t been to the gym in weeks so it didn’t really matter what muscle group I focused on so I worked out my favorite muscles, Chest and Triceps. First I warmed up my shoulders and then went straight to the bench press. This is where problems arose, I wanted to have the best workout possible but at the same I didn’t want to hurt myself. This is where I had to fight my nerves and ask someone else to spot me. At my local gym there’s always workers/friends to spot me so asking someone I didn’t know is something I haven’t done in years. The person I asked was really nice and complimented my form. Still I didn’t want to bother him too much so I only did 2(two)sets where he spotted me. I moved on to incline bench press where I didn’t go to heavy because I was tired, as I didn’t work out in a while. Than as my usual routine I went on to dumbbell presses. I usually start with 40s as I’m already warmed up and I move my way up to 55s. Since I’ve started college I’ve been eating really unhealthy so it shouldn’t surprise me that I couldn’t get up to 55s but it did. It was one of the most depressing feelings you can get when you can’t get a weight up you could before. The same person who spotted me told me I’d get there eventually and actually would have been able to lift the weight if I didn’t bench before. It was pretty comforting since I knew it was only because I just got back into working out. This activity really motivated to continue going to the gym and make time for it. I know it’s hard but he told me it’s all about time management and 100% doable. Since I went I’ve been going to my local gym and making a conscious effort to eat clean.
New Student Loft Party
On Thursday, August 31st, my friends and I were all debating whether or not going to the New Student Loft Party was actually worth it. We knew that we had to go to an event for this blog post, but we all really wanted to just go home. We were eventually sold because we heard there was going to be free food, and we are always down for free food. Faria, Sadia, and I all have Pre Calculus together on Thursday afternoons, so we just left together afterwards. The class ended at four thirty five, so we had a little bit of time to kill until the New Student Loft Party at six o’clock. We decided to go to the library, at the sixth floor computer labs, to do some homework together until it was time to leave at around five forty five.
After we left the sixth floor of the library, we met up with my friend, Josslyn, and Michelle and her friend, Sarah, outside the Newman Vertical Campus Building to wait on line to enter the Multi Purpose Room. The line led us to a bunch of food set up in the hallway. We each got a cute little slider burger with some fries, dipping sauce, and some soda. We took our food into the Multi Purpose Room, and walked around aimlessly to try to find some space at a table. We eventually squeezed our way into a very small and crowded table to stand and eat our food. The burger was kind of cold, but still it was free food, so I was not complaining.
We looked around us to see that there were a lot of games set up, such as giant Jenga, giant checkers, giant chess, and giant Connect Four. There was a DJ playing old, but still good, music. There were cute fairy lights around the entire room, which you can see above us in the selfie attached. I remembered the room from Freshmen Orientation and a Campus Tour I went on, when there were a lot of tables set up, explaining Baruch’s many programs. However, the room was not nearly as crowded those two times as it was for this New Student Loft Party.
I did not think that many people were going to show up, but the entire room was packed. We were able to meet a lot of people, and make a lot of new friends. We learned that a lot of people were also there just for the sake of free food and to take a selfie for this blog post. Our selfie was taken right before I left. In the selfie, from left to right, is Josslyn, me, Michelle, Sadia, Sarah, and Faria. The selfie is really bad quality, but at least you can kind of see the cute lights they put up in the background above us.
Although I could not stay the entire time, I was still glad that we ended up deciding to go. Not only did I get to eat some free food, but I got to meet some new people as well.

In the room, there were about fifty students, about half of them being freshman. The interest meeting began with a ice breaker. Everyone took turns stating what year they are in, their major and something interesting about themselves. This took about twenty minutes. The ice breaker was effective in introducing ourselves but I feel like they could have done a better job engaging everyone present with one another. As a prospective science major, I felt a bit relieved that some freshman also stated that they are a science major. Being a science major in a school where everyone talks about business is a unique experience.
In the meeting, it was revealed that the Muslim Student Association club is closely tied in with the Women In Islam club and the Muslim Business Association club. Women In Islam is a club that focuses on women and the rights/ role given to them in Islam. It is also a place to develop a sisterhood bond. Women In Islam often does co-ed events as well and is not always exclusively for girls. Muslim Business Association is a club that exclusively focuses on business and is a good club for people who are interested in business to join.
Muslim Student Association is a club whose primary goal is to provide a welcoming atmosphere for Muslims and non-Muslims alike in order to inform them about the religion of Islam. I appreciated this statement because as a Muslim it makes me happy that there is a MSA in college as well. I was actually the President of my high school’s MSA during my senior year. I also found out that Baruch has a designated prayer room for both girls and guys. The atmosphere emitted by the committee members was very welcoming and it was something I greatly appreciated.
After the meeting, everyone got to have food. The food was thai shrimp fried rice and I did not eat it as I had already gotten food earlier. Near the end of the meeting, the president of the Women In Islam club, informed us that there are available committee positions that are open to anyone regardless of their grade. She convinced me to fill out the application. I thought that this was a good approach as it got freshman to be more involved in a club. The best part of MSA is that it does not host meeting every week so it is possible to join several clubs.
MSA is hosting a Eid Party on September 19th and the best part of the party is that it is open to everyone regardless of whether or not they attend Baruch. I think that the Eid party will be a good way to actively engage prospective MSA members with one another. My friends and I are going to go to Eid event and we are planning on dressing up by wearing traditional clothing. Eid is an Islamic holiday and Eid-ul-Adha happened about twenty days ago. The event is good way to bring the Muslim and non-Muslim community together.
The picture is of Sadia and I. Sadia is the treasurer in MSA.

Baruch Loft Party
Baruch Loft Party. Thursday night. Right before a Friday. Hosted by USG. Lit or nah?
When my friends and I first heard about the loft party, we all assumed how it was going to be just another forced, cheesy ice breaker; essentially a drag. However, as you can see from this picture , we had a lot of fun. I only went to take a picture for a FRO blog because that was the one of the incentives that made me go. The other was food.
Me, Tiffany, Maria, and Yina didn’t even bother to go out to eat just so we can keep our wallet full (debatable) by eating the food provided by the party. We assumed it was just going to be pizza, but no. BURGERS AND FRIES.
My stomach’s impatience grew the longer we waited on the line. I could feel my stomach twist and turn more and more after every additional second. It could sense the burgers that sat on the tables beyond the two guards.
Once we were allowed to go inside, we rushed and followed the scented trail that lead to the tables. We quickly grabbed a burger, some fries, and a drink, and went into the room. As soon as we stepped in, we saw giant chest pieces and Jenga Tower wood blocks, along with other games that I don’t know the name of. They don’t matter tho, I didn’t go to play games, I went to EAT and TURN UP.
The burgers and fries tasted amazing, but I was immediately hungry again after I started dancing for three hours straight. Of course, I had to take a bathroom break because someone bumped into me and ruined my white sweater with my own cup of Hawaiian fruit punch. Adding to the misfortune, I didn’t have a shirt or tank top underneath, so I couldn’t change. Turning it inside out didn’t work. I also denied my friend Deana’s offer of her dad’s long sleeve. I had to improvise by wearing it backwards and wearing my book bag to hide the stains on the back.
I should have just wore my stained sweater without the book bag, because for the next remaining hours, I had to dance with my book bag on. It was still worth it though because it was fun to dance with my friends and other new freshmen.
We jammed to whatever song the DJ put on, swaying our hips, arms, our entire bodies as we moved closer to the center. The dance floor had multiple circles of people dancing. In the center of my circle, a girl named Destiny threw out some amazing moves. She could do all types of dancing from robotic to break dancing. She wasn’t the only one that was amazing. I remember seeing and laughing at a few dancers that went around dancing with giant chest pieces in their hands.
By the end of the party, I’ve made some new friends, and got closer to the ones that I made from my FRO class. I had an amazing time, evident by how I looked like I took a shower. My curled and puffy hair became straight. It was worth it.
STARR Career Fair
On Friday, September 15, I went to the STARR Career fair not knowing what to expect. The night before, I still didn’t complete my resume and read through any the information I was provided. After completing my resume at 2 AM Friday morning, I decided to take a quick look at the email STARR had sent out earlier in the day. I quickly read through the employers that will be showing up and just sorted through the ones I see myself fit at that would offer internships in the legal industry or something to do with the City of New York. I happen to come across NYC Department of Investigations and just put it at the bottom of my list of things to peak at when I am finished. I found some interest in the other five companies I came across, but when I got to NYC Department of Investigations, I was surprised. What surprised me was how exciting this organization seemed to me. I just could not stop reading through all the Squads and what there responsibilities are. Along with this, I kept on recalling of all the investigations that there office ran which I saw. As I was reading, I started envisioning myself like I never before; I kept thinking of me truly enjoying myself. I felt as if I truly found my perfect career option, this satisfied both my desires to work with law while being directly involved in the issues that effect New York City. So that night, I went to bed excited and envisioning this future I was passionate about. When I showed up to the fair, I thought I might speak with different people for a minute and that would be that. Speaking with the State of New York and TD Bank were just what I expected, a quick one minute pitch and handed papers. When I finally went over to the NYC Department of Investigations, I got anxious because I felt this was my one opportunity to sell myself. I took a deep breath and then went over. I walked over and the representative was very blunt, straight up and intimidating; for some reason, I just came out with my pitch confidently that I practiced for 1 minute total. All the sudden, he asks me and the two others next to me, “Why do you want to work for us? What do you know about us?” I gave my answer and he just looked at us like confused, all the sudden, he says “I don’t usually take Freshman’s and Sophomore’s, but Joseph, I like the way you articulate yourself.” The feeling I had at that moment I can’t even begin to put in words; all I can say is that I was so excited and in shock. I never felt happier in my life and more confident in myself. The next minute later, I ask him questions and he was just so impressed, I could not believe it. I was even more excited when I saw him put a star on my resume. I happen to look at my watch and realize I spent 35 minutes with this one organization, I felt as if I found my dream internship and dream career so I didn’t need to speak with another organization. After walking out, I immediately called my parents and texted my Uncle and shared just how excited I was. I felt as if this was the most exciting day of my life. What I was taught by today is to always be ready, be open, and just take things one moment at a time. http://<img src=”http://i64.tinypic.com/2zpl5io.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”Image and video hosting by TinyPic”>
STARR Career Fair – Jeramia James
While I was sitting on my bed the night before staring at my resume, I was wondering if this would be enough to impress the employers at the career fair. I tweaked my resume to its best and started to think of things to say to the employers. However, when it came time to go to the career fair, I’ve realized something, I might be the youngest one there. At the career fair, I was shocked to see a line that stretched down two floors from the main floor. It was at this moment that I realized that ids that go to Baruch care about their future careers. I also realized that getting a job will be very competitive seeing as how so many people attend these fairs to get an internship or a job. The career fair really helped me to understand and taught me to understand what I have to do when I am a junior and start looking for internships and jobs. I have learned how to introduce myself to the employers to present the best part of me. I talked to many employers ranging from the CIA to Bloomberg. From all these companies, I learned that accounting and finance play a major role in all of them. The first group of people I talked to was the CIA. I learned that CIA offers many jobs with a major in accounting. The internships are offered in the summer and require the student to relocate to Washington DC for the period of the internship. The same was said by the FBI, except the internship could be taken in their field offices like the one in New York City. For the FBI, I was mainly informed by a current intern that was being given a part time job, while still a sophomore. The MTA also offers internships for accounting majors. Rana Constant, who was the person I talked to, told me that people who worked in the MTA with accounting degrees turned out to be successful, mainly because other employers love to hire employers who worked for the MTA. The most interesting employer I talked to that day would be US Customs and Border Patrol agents. I was really surprised to see an employer who seems like they only hire agents for the field, hire many people with majors in accounting and finance. I learned that it was accountants in the department itself that handle all the money. It doesn’t get contracted to any company and the department does it themselves. I also talked to other companies that day like Bloomberg LP and Citi Bank. I wasn’t too surprised to see they business majors and I pretty much knew what to expect from these two companies. This is what I learned from my time at the career fair. For the time I was there, about two and half hours, I was able to learn so much more about the hiring process. I also learned that accounting existed in so many different companies including the FBI and CIA.

Loft Party – Student Life
The day of the loft party I was debating on whether to go or not. In the end we all ended up going for the free food and for the sake of this blog post. Our last class of the day ended about 2 two hours before the loft part was to start so we all headed to the library to get some work done. By we I mean Sadia, Alicia, and I. We met up with Alicia’s friend Josslyn and headed to the library, I did my english homework to pass the time until it was time for the party. Fifteen minutes before six the four of us headed to the forming line into the loft part where we met up with Michelle and her friend Sarah.
As we were heading inside we were served the free food. We got these adorable mini burgers from Bare Burger, french fries, dipping sauce and a soft drink of choice. We got inside and I, being the mess I am, bumped into someone and spilled some of my soda on my shirt. It was not that bad so I just hid it with my hair and it dried, since it was a tiny spill. We squeezed ourselves into this tiny, already occupied, table (with permission, of course) to finish our food.
The music was pretty loud inside and they were playing some throwback songs that people were getting really into. Nostalgia will always get people these days. The loft party was at the same room Freshman Orientation was in, but the room felt smaller that day with the dancing crowd and the giant games. They had cute fairy lights hung up, too. After we finished eating we took a group selfie, that I linked above these paragraphs. From left to right, the picture was of Josslyn, Alicia, Michelle, Sadia, Sarah (behind Sadia), and little me. Alicia said we all look like babies in the picture and I couldn’t help but agree.
The rest of the night we participated in the games that were provided, danced, socialized with new people, and just had an overall good time. I was excited to play giant jenga because I was obsessed with jenga and I had always wanted to play giant jenga. There was also giant chess and connect four. I met some new people, friends of friends and so on. We all danced to some 90s and 00s music and just had a good time. I could not stay the whole time, however. My mother wanted me home that day because it was my birthday and I wanted to spend time with my family since I was in Baruch pretty much all day. The loft party was fun as it was a good way to meet some new people in my first year of college and have fun at the same time. It allowed me to release some pressure and pent up tensions I was feeling from being introduced to this new environment of schooling and higher education. It all felt daunting at first but I am definitely more situated now and excited to start this new chapter in my life.
Student Life Blog Post
For my first blog post, I chose to use a photo from the USG welcome week party. I chose to go to this event really because I wanted to see what it would be like. I had never been to a Baruch party before so this was my first try. I wanted to go with friends so that I wouldn’t be lonely. While chatting with friends over lunch, we decided to go to the party together! Since it was a Thursday night, it was our last day of classes for the week, we had a pile of homework to do. After classes we went to the library to work on homework. Since I was going to have a really busy weekend, I wanted to finish as much homework as I could. At around six o’clock, we decided to leave the library and walk to the Newman Vertical Campus. After waiting and chatting on line to enter, we got on line for burgers and soda since we were all famished. When we walked in holding our plates and cups, we weren’t sure where to go, or much of the people in the room. We were standing by the bar stools and ate our burgers and sipped our sodas while somehow chatting over the blasting music. It was so loud, we could barely hear the people that were standing next to each other. The burgers were pretty small so it didn’t take us long to finish them. Once we were done, we met different people that were there and started chatting with people. We got to take a selfie before it got too dark in the room. Throughout the night I was meeting new people and making new friends throughout the night. I ended up reconnecting with a girl from my middle school. We recognized each other but had never really spoken before, but when we met each other, we seemed very familiar. Then as we spoke we realized we had tons of mutual friends and interests. Its funny because ever since that night, she and I talk so much too! We talk about homework and our weekends, and even just what happens in our daily lives. As we became more comfortable throughout the night, my friends and I eventually started dancing and jumping around. It was really fun, after about an hour of dancing, we started getting really tired and also really hot. After a short break and some water, my friends and I went back in for some more fun. Then after some more dancing and getting to know more people, I started getting really tired. It had been a long and very eventful day and I was ready to crash. So a little while before the party ended I ended up walking out with some friends that I had met. It had been a really fun night and I was really happy that I had gone to the party. I made a lot of new friends and I was able to reconnect with someone from middle school. I was ready to go home and crash in my bed from after all this fun!

I have a great time at the Hillel and I learn a lot as well. I learned about the great amount of events that they host, such as the Brownstone Shabbaton and Kickin’ it with Karen. They always have something going on there. Whenever I walk in, they are all very nice and welcoming and always ask me if I have any questions. I also went to one of their events on thursday, when they partnered up with First to Lex, which had a vice president from Goldman Sachs speak about his experiences. He explained that he also went to Baruch and that Baruch very much helped him get the job. He also explained that preparation and hard work are among the most important things that once can do on a regular basis. He talked about how he came from Ukraine and that he was always good with numbers and had a passion for markets. After senior year, he was looking for jobs and saw that Goldman Sachs was having interviews for a internship job. He said he prepared for hundreds of hours and was prepared for any questions that may ask. He said the interview went well and he ended up getting the internship. After a few months on the job, they offered him a full time job. Another event that I really enjoyed going to was an event to learn about Russian Jews. It was really interesting to see the differences in both dialect and custom. I met a lot of new people and I look forward to hanging out with in the future. The sushi that they served did not make things any worse as well. Throughout the day, I often stop by the Hillel and see what’s going on there. I am never disappointed in what I experience. Either people are just chilling, or there are activities, or both, I always feel at home. Located on the 3rd floor right next to the game room, I enjoy switching off. Playing some ping pong, and then chilling in the Hillel. I have many friends who are older and went to Baruch for college and always told me about the Hillel. So I was excited to check it for myself when I finally came to Baruch. The energy that the Hillel creates is great. Everyone is welcome. Race, religion or any other difference do not matter. Hillel also provides many options in terms of learning. Whatever one wishes to learn, he or she will always be able to find someone at the Hillel who will be more than happy to sit down and learn that chosen subject. They also provide many varieties of foods. For example, as I stated earlier, there was sushi. And at the First to Lex event, they served shawarma and falafel. And hey regularly serve pizza. Overall, I have very much so enjoyed my experiences at the Hillel, whether it’s the people there, the things I learn there, or the food I eat there, I can always count on having a great time whenever I am there.
