In Albania there is this mentality that firstly people should finish college and then look for job. No working in between. So I hadn’t had the chance of writing a resume, because I didn’t need to. Why would I write one if I wasn’t going to use it?!
Anyways, when I moved to U.S and started applying for jobs, I was asked to submit a resume in every application. And every application was interrupted in half because I didn’t have a resume, and also I couldn’t write a professional one. Then I tried to, but it was so…empty. After that, the other concern was what am I going to write about?
I had just finished high school, and had no work experience at all. In my head, my resume it’d be like a blank sheet of paper. However, I wrote down whatever activity I had attended in high school, skills, etc, and I tried to do it the best way I could while watching some resume examples in internet. When I went to the STARR center, they assisted me in re-writing and they were explaining on the things I should focus on while writing one. By the end of the review, I didn’t have a blank sheet at all, but the contrary, a full-filled one. They added so many things, for which I hadn’t thought about before. Every contest I’ve had starting from the Science Olympiads to Theatre Participation was reflected in my resume. Going to the STARR centre and doing this review of the resume, not only is beneficial for your future applications, but also it makes you feel better. At least, I was feeling better after I got it done, because from nothing now I had something in my hands. Even if you think that everything’s okay with your resume, there is always place for improvements, so I’d definitely recommend you to give it a try !
