Today, during my two and a half hour break, I went to the Bio-Med society event. President of the Bio-Med society, Charissa, invited four resident surgeons to teach us how to suture.
When I walked into the room, it was filled with pre-med students who were already close , in time, to taking their MCAT’s–some even applied to Medical School already! The conversations about science I heard, were amazing, I love it. When we sat down into our seats and signed a liability and accident waiver form, that’s how you know it’s serious. The residents came in at 1 p.m, and introduced themselves. We all got a frozen pig foot which we were going to suture. One of the surgeons taught us every single step in suturing (we were provided with scalpels, surgical sutures, etc). As he was instructing us, the other surgeons walked around and helped us, if we messed up. They were so nice, helpful, and friendly, which made the whole experience worth it. This experience made my passion for wanting to be a surgeon, greater. I wanted to cry when the surgeon shared his experiences, and path to his almost-completed residency. He taught us different ways you can suture, left, right, up, down, etc. When we were done, we washed all the tools, and got ready to ask the surgeons any questions we had in mind. I asked a boat-load of questions that I had in mind, and he answered all of them with such interest and passion, oh my God.
After the suturing, trays of food came out–sandwhiches, chips, and beverages. I have never felt better about wanting to do surgery in the future. This even taught me a lot, motivated me, and assured me of my goals. I hope in the future there will be more events like this that I can attend.
