Battle of The Lex
It all started during freshman orientation when we were given a tour of Baruch and shown the main college gym. The first thing I thought was how excited I was to watch basketball games there, since we never had proper a basketball gym back in High School. That same day our freshman advisors told us about Battle of The Lex and how so many students come together to cheer on Baruch teams.
On February 2nd the men’s and women’s basketball teams would play against Brooklyn College. On game day there were so many people at the gym and almost all of us had Bearcats t-shirts on(which team baruch was giving out to students). Team spirit was pretty high and everybody was cheering; there were also competitions going on the basketball court before the game started to entertain the audience. Many students and clubs won prizes. Most importantly we had the coolest mascot ever who kept our spirits up.
First would play the women’s team.To my surprise they were actually very talented and kept the lead throughout almost the entire game.Everyone was so pumped and jumped up on their feet when our girls would score (we even boo’ed the other team during free throws but shh..).Unfortunately we lost the lead during the last quarter and consequently lost the game. During the small break until the men’s game started, cheerleaders took over and turned the whole audience’s attention towards them. Some were enjoying the cheering while others left to get mini burgers and hotdogs.
The men’s game was just as exciting or should I say more since it went into overtime in just the last seconds. We were all on our feet during the last minutes but unfortunately lost the second game as well.
Despite our results I found the whole experience a lot of fun and I wish we had more activities like these since it brings all the students together for The Bearcats.
I watched that same game with my friend Kumar. I can’t remember the last time I was so engaged in basketball game, and so remarkably disturbed by how quickly the odds turned against our school team.
