Today we had to go to a different room for class. We had a speaker come from the Starr Career Center. She basically went over all the benefits from the center and general information about it. I came in late but I got to hear most of it. This program is probably one of the most suggested by everyone, which shows its importance. I will most likely be stopping by next week. 

For this Career Workshop #3, I decided to share my appointment at the Weissman Center, more specifically, the internship program. It was an honor for me to have the opportunity to have Justine, a representative, to review my resume. I filled out an application form, and then I scheduled a 30-minute appointment. It was to my surprise that it started on time and ended exactly 30 minutes after. In those 30 minutes, I learned how to word my resume better and to have a proper format in my resume. For example, putting action words in front of my sentences to make it sound better. Another example is my + or ~ in front or behind to indicate “more than” and “about”. I also learned that it is fine if each description line extends beyond one line and consistency is the key.

In addition to learning how to have a good resume, I learned what type of internship I should expect or I could expect. I did not know that some companies would give me credits (school/ class credits or community service hours) if they do not pay me. I also did not know that most internship applications are as simple as sending in my resume, and then the rest should be good. That being said, I learned the values of a resume and that if I want to get a good first impression, all of what is on it should reflect who I am as an individual.

Afterward, I was very happy to receive emails from the Weissman Center regarding internships. The one that I am most excited about applying to is the Spring 2020 Marketing and Communication Internship with Spadet and the position as Marketing Associate Intern at The Burgess Group. Since I am majoring in marketing management, anything associated with marketing, I get really excited over. That being said, I cannot wait for the next years to come as I spearhead my first internship in college!

For this workshop I decided to attend to the International Student Service Center career night for Undergraduates. In there there were 7 speaking, four of the people work at Baruch, one of them was a student from Baruch that won a stock competition, another one was a graduate from Baruch, and another one was a graduate from Hofstra University that now works for Bank of America. In there they discussed about things that I could do after graduating, they  said that I can only apply for internship once i’m fully accepted to the university; this means that I need to complete all the required classes in order to be admitted to Zicklin school of business.

During the workshop there were two people asking other staff members questions about how they did in order to get a job, how hard it was for them. There were some people talking about their experiences while looking for a job and what they did in order to find a job. I found very interesting how networking is so important in order for you to have a job even before you graduate.

The event was pretty quiet since there were not many students present. I found this very useful since I wanted to know more about internships and what I need to do as International student. Going to this workshop made me wonder about so many things so I started finding out more things about Baruch. I found out that I can go to someone in the office and ask them to help me write a resume and prepare students when going to a interview. In general I enjoyed going to this event because its was one of the first time that I attended to a Baruch career events.

The marketers expo was an interesting experience. I went there with fares and a few others because honestly it was kind of intimidating. A line full of hundreds of people in suits, and I was wearing timbs and my oversized jacket. Nevertheless i wanted to get an experience. So I waited on that line which seemed to take forever and I entered the room. It was basically an informational session. I basically watched how the people talked and interacted more so than interacting myself. These were professionals at what they did so i took in their atmosphere and reactions. I myself am not a marketing major, I am economics. But I am also still a freshman and don’t know exactly what I want, so I want to see it all before i make life changing choices. It was interesting. It was a fun event but I could only stay for around 45 mins-1hr because of previous commitments. Marketing seems interesting though, I may look into it more. I had fun there, worth the trip.

For this workshop, I went to the marketing expo that was brought to us by the STARR Center. It was on the 14th floor and I didn’t even know you could go that far as the staircase only goes to the 13th unless you use the ones behind the doors. Even though I am a finance major it seemed like an interesting event to go to as I was able to talk to many representatives of the companies that were there. They gave me insight on the types of people they take, the jobs they do and how they contribute to the company. I was considering marketing as it seems more group involved which is something I’m more into as Finance seems to lack a little in it and Marketing seems more fun and strategic at the same time while also a little laid back and casual. Overall I gained a lot of insight from the event and it’s making me consider switching to a marketing major but as of right now still not sure.

This past week has been challenging to say the least. I just felt overwhelmed. It feels like as much work as I do I can never get ahead in a class. It feels like I’m constantly striving to make sure I can cover myself for the next class. At this point  classes are starting to get very difficult and the material is very hard too.  I started to get the hang of balancing out school, laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, working out, and socializing, but when things start to overlap I’m often scrambling to make sure I do everything I need to. Last week was one of those weeks, with exams in Psychology, Music, and Math, food to cook, cleaning, laundry, and still finding time to sleep has been hard, but I did it.

It beens enlightening in some sense to see the true intent of some people’s actions. This past week I broke up with my boyfriend. Although our relationship was not long, I still cared about him deeply. I broke up with him because of his constant lying, that I had only come to find out because of a mutual friend who he told me not to talk to. Everything was revealed, and it had to be done. However, I think I am much happier now. He has always been a hinderance to me at college, not wanting me to go out, constantly wanting me to talk to him, and always up my back about everything. Time will heal me, I just hope he can be truthful to the next boy he dates. I’m moving on to better things.

This was just another typical college workweek. The same old classes, same exams, same meals. I hate being in a routine. I think of it as an asset and a weakness. I get bored with things so easily, which is one of the main reasons why I chose New York to be the place for me to go to college. Though, I still find myself constantly stuck in routines. It’s okay I guess, it gives my life structure, its just not something I like. I went out this past weekend and made so many new friends that I go along with, and have a feeling we will continue to be for time to come. That is one great thing about college I think, the constant influx of friends and acquaintances.

For my third enrichment workshop I decided to fulfill my social workshop. I decided to go to BSA mock wedding because I heard a lot about it. Initially I didn’t want to go but my friend was performing so he made me go. But I was happy I went because with my friends and I it was a lot of fun. It was in the multi purpose room which honestly wasn’t that big enough because there were a lot of people there. There was a huge line in front of the multi purpose room. When we got there there were no seats so my friends and I were standing there most of the time. There weren’t just south Asian people there. Well a majority was south Asian, but I saw some other people from different races. I like how we can appreciate other cultures and share it with other races and ethnicities. The food was okay. I didn’t eat much there. The performances was really good. I know they practiced a lot before. My friend did good too. He told me he never danced before so he did good in a big crowd. When the performances were over the dance floor opened and everyone was dancing. I got stepped on like 100 times and  I was sweating a lot but the energy in the room was nice. I expected to leave early but I stayed the entire time. Overall it was a very fun experience.

To no surprise, again another great week at college. I spent my weekday nights studying, hanging with friends, and going out. Aside from this, I went home again! This time it wasn’t an unexpected trip; I came home to celebrate mine and my brother’s birthday! I came home Thursday morning, and my parents through my brother and I a party that night. I turned 19 and he turned 30. Friday I drove up to Slippery Rock University to visit my godbrother and four cousins! It was so nice to see them, I hadn’t see them in months. Before I knew it I was headed back to New York. Again, it was so great to see my family. I am partly sad though because I’ll be seeing them next on Thanksgiving Day.
