Weekly reflection

I haven’t had FYS in awhile, it’s always so different every class. Not complaining. This week the free period was alright. I wasn’t sure what to do but  I was happy we finally got the promised Dunkin’ Donuts. The counseling was cool too, I signed up for an appointment that same day coincidentally so I got a lot of coinciding that day. I have an idea of what my schedules going to be  this next semester.  Besides the class I finally met my club members, and that was my week.

Weekly reflection

Last class we had 5 minutes to write something about oneself, after finish writing we had to present what we had written down. Each person had about 1 minute to speak. In overall I think this is a good practice for future presentations because once you get comfortable speaking in public then you can achieve better intonation and wont be afraid anymore.

weekly reflection #4

We haven’t had FYS class in a while. The days off have felt good but at the same time now I have to get back on my pace and grind. I have to remind myself to make sure to stay focused and on track in my school work. When you have a thousand things happening in your life, it is hard to make sure you get things done and don’t get distracted. In class we have still been continuing the monologues. Getting up in front of a whole room of people doesn’t get easy until you really practice it so I guess it’s good life experience. We’ll see how things go next week.

Weekly reflection #4

We went over peoples monologues and they presented  a quick introduction of themselves. Feedback was given to the students of what they did good on and what they should improve on. It helped me learn more on what is expected from my monologue. Then we have a check up on how life was going regarding my academic, social, work and family life.

Weekly Reflection #5

These past couple weeks have been very calm, there have been a variety of different holidays for which we got a couple days off. We have not had FYS in a long time, but this last class was very helpful. Some of the students were able to practice for their monologue, which was a great aid, for it helped the students improve their presentation skills and learn more about the monologue format. We were also asked how this first semester is going so far and if we had any issues we wanted to talk about. We were given our teachers contact information in case we had any further questions. For me everything is going quite well in this first couple of months, it is getting a bit colder but other than that everything is great.

Weekly Reflection 10/15

I like how we’re getting a switch of pace and heading into the phase of monologue presentations. It has been interesting so far and I am looking forward to hearing monologues from more of my classmates. Having not had FYS for a couple of weeks, I appreciated the chance to catch up with my classmates while Bernice and Gabriela did mid-semester check-ins on everyone. The munchkins were really tasty as well(thanks Gabby!), I should know because I ate the most, surprisingly almost nobody wanted free munchkins.

Enrichment Workshop #2 – Student Life

For my second enrichment workshop which focuses on student life, I want to share what club activities I have been participating in. I am in both VSA(Vietnamese Student Association) and Ascend, but I will be focusing on Ascend for this assignment. I am a mentee in Ascend’s LLP(Legacy Leadership Program) which is a professional development and mentorship program. We are assigned mentors which consist of juniors and seniors with considerable experience in the professional world, and through the course of 10 weeks we participate in weekly workshops which focus on skill development, leadership enrichment, and business etiquette. Weekly throughout these 10 weeks, we are obligated to present current events based on our respective industries and develop our Excel skills by completing Excel assignments as it is a crucial skill in the business world. By the end of this program, we are expected to have developed competent public speaking skills as well as know how to handle resumes, cover letters, interviews, case studies and stock pitches. It is a very intensive program and absorbing so much information in such a short period while handling the added workload can be overwhelming at times, but it is also starting me on the right path for my career and providing me with a high standard that I can hold myself to which I am very grateful for.

Enrichment Workshop #2

For the second enrichment workshop, my friends and I decided to go to the SACC center. The SACC center is the student academic consulting center where their goal is to help undergraduate students better their education. We had asked about what subjects they offer tutoring for and they gave us a range, for example, Math, Business (which we won’t have to worry about until junior year), Modern Language, etc. They’re available in the daytime, evening, and Saturday’s, with small groups of up to 3 students to allow the tutors to focus on them and the content better to increase their understandings. I went to SACC recently for help with my math homework since my actual professor was not available. The tutor was extremely helpful and explained and broke down the problem step-by-step to ensure me and my friends understood it. They even have textbooks and calculators to assist you, I’ll definitely be visiting the SACC more often beginning soon especially with midterms around the corner. Midterms and finals seem so much farther than they are but I’ll definitely be needing assistance in preparing for those. Math has always been a subject that I understood, but in college it’s a rush of a lot of things, that i know and that are new. I feel lucky to have a tutoring center available, hopefully with their help I can be an “A” student and become a future SACC tutor.

Reflection

This week’s class was pretty easy-going as it always is. A lot more students were chosen to present their mini monologues in class and it had me feeling pretty nervous because i didn’t really want to be one of them. Since we didn’t have class for a while and we been having a lot of off days, I’ve been taking the time to study for upcoming midterms and complete homework instead of waiting right before the deadline. I’ve had a lot of older students tell me freshman year would be a breeze and the workload is easy, but that really isn’t the case, everything kind of hits you like a truck all at once, so the best thing you can do is manage your time and try to be responsible.

Weekly Reflection #4

These past few weeks have been pretty chill considering the days we have been having off. I spent the days off working on finishing assignments ahead of time so I wouldn’t have to worry about procrastination.  I have started coming up ideas for the monologue and begun typing it. I have also started to prepare for the second enrichment workshop that is due next week. This week’s class allowed students to practice their presentation skills for their monologues and involved more of a reflection about how we are doing in our first semester. I would say, I have enjoyed these past few weeks and college has treated me well. Classes have been straightforward with the exception of some but as of now, I’m at a good place and hope that it stays like this throughout the whole semester.
