Hesiod, Theogony
Here are the words the daughters of aegis-bearing Zeus,
the Muses of Olympos, first spoke to me.
“Listen, you country bumpkins, you pot-bellied blockheads, we
know how to tell many lies that pass for truth,
and when we wish, we know to tell the truth itself.”
I think this section is the author trying to show people about the mercy of the Muses and Zeus, such as they could make the lie turning into the truth or manipulate all the messages which they would like to tell people. Also, this section could be the way how the author praises those gods who have the power to tell people what is the truth for them. From the words :”Listen, you country bumpkins, you pot-bellied blockheads” the gods were trying to warn the ignorant people they should extol what’s the gods have done for them. In my opinion, the words just show those gods who have power to manipulate people to keep doing eulogize to them. In some aspect, these reveal the ancient people have overloading worship to those gods. These discourtesy to uncivilized people was despised.
