Dharma

Dharma had many definitions in religions found in India (Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, etc). Since Sakuntala is a story that follows a Hindu belief, I’ll define it in terms of this religions belief. In the Hindu religion Dharma is the ultimate universal law/code, it sets the principles of how you are to conduct your being in accordance to its law, religion and overall way of life. To leave the endless cycle of death and rebirth (samsara) one has to follow these principles. However, these principle apply in different way to individuals. It is in accordance to your gender, age, occupation and position in the caste. Though reformers reinterpreted this very crucial part of Hinduism, such as Mohandas Gandhi who saw it in terms of a spiritual way for true human freedom.
