The Fearless Girl
Fearless Girl
On my daily commute I usually walk past the crowd of tourists that gather around the tremendous Charging Bull. The site has been so common for me since it’s been around before I was born. It wasn’t until recently that a new sculpture began to steal the attention away from the bull, and created what could be a new trend around the city. The fearless girl is what I consider collaborative art. An artist takes preexisting art and contributes to it without taking away from its original purpose.
The Charging Bull is a large bronze sculpture that represents the hopefulness of an aggressive and prosperous fiscal era. It helps motivate the young financial advisors, but mostly serves as a New York City Landmark, a dream, a physical representation of the success of New York. Now with the addition of the Fearless girl the bull still has the same significance but it also sheds light on the dominance of men in the financial industry. The fearless girl is also bronze and stands at the same height of a little 7 / 8 year old girl. She represents the young girl full of opportunity, and not afraid to stand up to the competitive and aggressive market that hasn’t been fair for women. Not only does she inspire little girls, but also anyone who receives discrimination at the workplace. Immigrants and tourist see the little girl as a person facing the huge 3 ton challenge. Now, when I walk by the unarmed, juvenile matador willing to fight for equality I also get inspired to take on all of the obstacles in my path.
