History: A Saga of Bias

Blight’s “Race and Reunion” has obviously had an impact on Foner, and I’ve found that its messages and theories seem like worthwhile reads. What we perceive today as facts about events such as the Civil War may well be the result of a collection subjective views with omissions or perhaps even incomplete retelling, and we, as the educated would be wise to keep this in mind. I gather that Mr. Foner had been intrigued by Blight’s writing, evident throughout his review. A key point of note is the need for caution and objectivity in accepting records of history of the past, as the people of the United States have shown a tendency to take sides in believing what they want to believe have happened.
