History Is Written by the …Losers?

David Blight’s “Race and Reunion” sounds like an interesting read. “Race and Reunion” is a book that seems to share a different side of the Civil War that is often misunderstood. Blight expresses that the Confederacy “lost the war on the battlefield but won the war over memory,” which is ironic because it is often believed that history is written by the victors. Blight goes on to explain the reasoning behind this, such as the propaganda advocated by President Woodrow Wilson, such as allowing the film “Birth of a Nation” at the White House.

Eric Foner definitely liked this book. He even goes to say that he regrets that Blight didn’t bring the book up to the present. Reading would benefit anyone, regardless of their background. It teaches a lot about history and how it is interpreted. Like Blight said, “A segregated society demanded a segregated historical memory.” In history, it is very dogmatic and people wish to remember what they want to remember.
