All the world over, so easy to see
People everywhere just wanna be free
Listen, please listen, that’s the way it should be
Deep in the valley, people got to be free

this rascals song by the title “people got to be free” represents freedom in every sense for the 60s. Released in 1968, this song symbolized many movements of the time like the civil rights movement and the hippie movement. The lyrics, from the first verse above, say it all. No matter where you are, people just want to be free.
A listener at the time could easily associate it to social change. Another term for this change was “counter-culture”, or movement away from the norm. At this time, controversy was sparking up over Vietnam as well so this song could be used to demonstrate how people all over just want to be free as opposed to under communist rule.
