Nov 16th Freedom in the 50’s

Elvis Presley

One of the freedoms gained in the 1950’s is rebellion. Our civilization started to expand in it’s concept of what is accepted and what isn’t. Rock and roll, specifically Elvis, was an expression of teenage freedom and nonconformity. Music was now for partying and not simply for enjoyment. Elvis was a heart throb amongst women and was one of the first sexual icons of his time.

The next picture represented a growing strength in women to live and be independent. It originally started by attempting to persuade a family to own two cars so the wife could go places while her husband was at work. What ended up happening however, was that women grew more and more independent and eventually, women started pursuing their own careers and the stereotypical family of the 50’s suburbs was no longer possible.
