Final Project

Meghan Sharp

For the final project, I decided to do a brochure on the TV show Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks takes place in the early 90’s and Lucy, the secretary of the sheriff’s department is always typing on her typewriter. So for my typeface for my headings and quotes I decided to go with Lucida Sans Typewriter to relate back to Lucy’s typewriter and the show. For the body text I went with Helvetica  because I thought it really worked well with Lucida Sans Typewriter. I also chose this typeface because I really thought that it gave the brochure that old look, like an old newspaper. It also just worked with the strange element that I was going for…because Twin Peaks is strange and weird.

I learned a lot from the project with working with the layout. Theres was a lot more that I wanted to incorporate but with the limited space I needed to decided what I wanted to show the most. I changed the layout and the idea for this project about four or five times, even after doing many sketches. Once I got into Indesign I was able to see what was going to work and what wasn’t. This project gave me a better understanding for what is needed in creating a layout for a brochure or any kind of print media, but I know there is still a lot more that I can learn.

Illustrated Quote Analysis

For this project, when making my sketches I didn’t realize that I wasn’t creating new ideas, I was just making variations of the same idea. After re-doing my sketches and thinking more I was able to come up with many more ideas for my project. While working in Indesign I was also able to come up with even more. I decided to use Century Expanded for my type because I thought it worked best with my quote about adventure. While working with the text I really wanted to make Passion and Adventure the first words you saw when looking at my project. I really thought that was important because they help convey what the image is about. I also thought that mirroring the image was a great idea because you can get a better sense of adventure. From the project, I learned that you don’t always come up with your best ideas on the first try, and that you need to try try again. I also learned that taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone can help you come up with so many great and new ideas.

Hand-Writing Analysis

For this project I decided to choose Bodoni style. I chose Bodoni because I really liked how type looked more modern. While working it with it I realized that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Bodoni was what became the modern type with the serif being boxed out instead of rounded on the edges. Trying to create the perfect serifs with perfect straight edges was really challenging. Also, working with the thick and thin relationship of certain letters became a challenge. While working on my name, free handed, it was difficult to do the M and the N without any help.

Another challenging part of this project was creating the perfect amount of space between each letter. I had a really tough time with R and A in my word “CRAFTY”. There was a lot of white space between the two of them at first when I did my first draft. I had so much space because I thought having them too close wouldn’t look right, when in fact having them closer made the whole word look more like a word and more put together. Even though this project was tedious and frustrating, it really made me understanding the art of type more and have more of an appreciation of it.

Sharp: What is Graphic Design?

Meghan Sharp

This article gave a great explanation of graphic design. Even as a potential graphic designer, I never really looked at graphic designing as a form of problem solving, which a huge majority of it. Graphic design is also the biggest form of communication (visual and textual) around the world and has been around forever. All over the earth there are different forms of graphic design communication in all different forms. From ads on a taxi to commercials on tv, to books and magazine to a informational visual or graphic. There are so many different types that keep us all connected in some level no matter what cultural or so on.

Graphic Design is a field that I dream to be apart of one day, unfortunately I do not know exactly what field of it that I want to go into yet. After reading the part of the article “Design Jobs”, seeing all of the different types of titles for some of them (and getting a little overwhelmed), my question is how does one figure our where the should be in the design world? Of course one has to start from the bottom and work their way up the chain but as what? I for one, love animation and visual stuff so looking into exploring my talents and finding my own styling in these two fields could lead me the to the potential dream career in graphic design.
