I think this advertising design is successful.  This design can explain clearly and simply what the product is. Also, it can show the product’s advantage which are thin and light weight. it also works color, type contrast well.

3)

images-7

I think this movie poster is good. it is simple but stylish. Negative space works well, and type and image works well. Also, this poster can tell what the movie is about, so I think it cannot have people’s attention.

Unsuccessful design example

Colors and Images are too busy, and I do not know what advertising tell about the product. Images are all around the design and color is too bright.

2) 3D-Type-Sculptures-Animation15-640x618

Blog Homework #2_ Kyung Hwa Lee

This method is very interesting and it looks good. I never know this method, and these days I did not know that this kind of method. When I use this method in graphic design, it would be more detail and clean design. However, the processing of the method is complicate, and it takes long time to do design.  It is difficult and, I think I need to learn special skills. I could use this method when client wants detail hand typographic work.

Blog Homework #1_ Kyung Hwa Lee

Before I read the article, I did not know what graphic design is. I just thought that graphic design is just one of the arts, but it is not. I can understand what graphic design is. According to the author, “graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas.” Graphic design is communication with people. Graphic design is all around us. It can tell us by image or typographic. I can put emphasize to think about “communication” when I design.

I have question. How can I handle idea when I design? Sometimes people can think lot of good idea, but handling ideas is too difficult. Thus, I want to know more about how designer can handle their lots of good ideas.

This video was interesting to watch. Punchcutting seems like it is very simple but complicated process. You simply copy the letter to the metal piece but it takes a long time to file down the metal piece to make it look nice. Punchcutting is what we went to in the beginning of the class. Tracing our name. It was not easy to trace the letters but we all did it. Punchcutting is an old method but we cannot ignore it because without it we would not have newspapers in the old days and whatever needed to be printed.

Blog Homework 3 : Good design VS Bad design

amex_press_ad131

this design is very successful. in this design you can see the line through the word liiiiiiiiiiiiine. i feel that it is very effective that they used the word to illustrate it.

Creative-ads-frontline

this design is very successful. it is very visual and effective. without getting the pictures of flea onto the ad, they designed the ad big enough so that the walking people would present the flea on the dog.

Absolute_Ad_Centerfold_Page_2

this a is very successful because it shows exactly how vodka is doing around the world. as you can see, they used vodka bottle from all around the world. you can see how popular vodka is and how it is in the world.

zizmor 1198

these two design is unsuccessful design because they have too much words on their ad. i believe that people stare at the ad for a long time only if it seems very interesting and appealing but these two ads doesnt make it interesting. because there are so many words on it. it makes it the ad seem crazy and not focused.

HT_abercrombie_fitch2_ad_ml_130710_16x9_608

this design is unsuccessful because you cannot see what this ad is for. A&F is clothing company but you cant see the clothing at all .

Bad Ad- Lego

i think this design is unsuccessful because you cant see what this commercial is really about. the words are too small and too light to make it seem like its a Lego commercial.

Blog HW #1

Not until reading the article did I realize how broad the term “Graphic Design” is and how it can really be applied to everything. When first taking the course, I thought of graphic design as solely a computer-based thing and mostly designing web pages and logos. I never thought about things such as the labels inside our clothing or on gum wrappers, movie credits, TV ads, etc.

Considering there are so many different directions that a graphic designer can go, one question I have is does a professional graphic designer usually stick to one category for most of their career? Like does a graphic designer usually find one, I guess “sub-category” to focus on and become an “expert” in? Like say, billboards? Or are a majority of graphic designers very versatile and work on a bunch of different kinds of projects from magazines, to billboards, to labels? Also, when you’re a graphic designer do you get hired as the graphic designer for one company and you’re their graphic designer for good? Or are you more independent and get hired by a variety of companies/businesses just for one of their projects/requests? My guess would be that I’m sure both are options in this career field, and it depends on what company it is you’re designing for. I’m sure big, established companies such as Google, Target, etc. have an established team of graphic designers who work on all types of their graphic design needs, and I’m sure small, independent businesses just hire a graphic designer for one task.

Another question I have is regarding restrictions when it comes to certain labels. For example- warning labels on products, warning/caution signs on the street, nutrition facts, etc. Are there specific fonts you must stick to? Is there a minimum size or maximum size? When it comes to labels on boxes or bottles of mediation (over the counter and prescription) is there like a law or something that says the must be a certain size to ensure the customer sees it and doesn’t skim over it? I would have to guess no when it comes to over the counter medication considering all the warnings like “may cause a heart attack or stroke” usually are microscopic and you have to squint to see. But with prescription medication I feel like all the labels are usually the same size, so maybe there is an established size that you have to print the name of the medication, dosages and patients name in?

The method of punch cutting was very tedious. In
the times that it was used, punch cutting was viewed as a career choice. The
level of patience and precision that it took just to design a single letter is
unbelievable. The worker would need a very sharp eye and steady hands for this
kind of work. Thanks to technology advances programs like Indesign make
designing letters seem like child’s play. An assignment for this course would
take me months to finish and submit using the punch cutting method. I can only
imagine the countless amounts of raw material that were used just to accomplish
a simple task.

RLF ADS

This design is successful, because the typeface that was chosen gave the advertisement a sophisticated look. The white letters over the blue polo shirt added to the consistent color pattern. I like how the placement of the cologne bottle is at the bottom of the advertisement, because it is the last thing you see.
