kissmyglass

This design is unsuccessful, because the humor in the advertisement makes the product less attractive to the consumer. The strange image grabs your attention and doesn’t allow you to acknowledge the name of the glasses. The patch on the bottom right corner seems out of place.

Punchcutting

The video on punch cutting was eye opening to say the least. Coming from a generation where nearly all letters are created with keyboards, and used in tweets and statuses, it is very shocking to learn how typefaces were first created and reproduced. The tedious process of punch cutting makes me very much appreciate the modern day inventions that make the practice useless and outdated. For a world where I have to hand draw every single letter is not a world I want to live in. At first when I came to class and was told to get out tracing paper to trace letters, I immediately panicked and wanted to flee the classroom. However, after much trial and errors, I learned that the seemingly ancient and outdated process can actually teach us very important elements of design, such as choosing the correct typeface and letter spacing.

Mitchell Kennedy: Blog Homework #3 Successful/unsuccessful Designs

badboyturboshotr

This is an example of unsuccessful design of an energy shot. The reason it is unsuccessful is because the design of the bottle is far too busy for its size. There are several different fonts contradicting one another, making the bottle hard to read. Also there is a red graphic border that really just makes the text harder to read as well.

web-design

This is an example of unsuccessful design of a logo. The reason it is unsuccessful is because the graphic lines behind the logo distract from the text itself. And the matching lines within the logo are overdone and seem to distract from the logo itself. The large pointing hand in the image just doesn’t belong and appears to be an afterthought just thrown in last minute.

images

This is another example of an unsuccessful logo design. The reasons it was not successful is not only are the letters very overcrowded and hard to read with their dramatic overlapping, the design behind the logo takes away from the word itself rather than adding to it. Similar to the energy shot design, this logo just seems to busy and not a clear concise logo.

audi_r8_ad1

This is an example of successful design. The ad is for an Audi R8 which is the top of the line mass produced Audi, this is conveyed through a clever message saying, ” Then again, maybe you don’t have a few minutes.” The text is used to infer the quick speed of the super car, while the image shows its sleek and cutting edge design. The ad also has a nice flow to it from top to bottom leaving the viewer with little to ponder.

APPLE_AD__NANO_CHRM____by_kurtss

This Apple ad is another example of successful design. The tagline says ” The colors of music” which speaks directly to the message they are trying to convey. That Apple’s new iPod comes in many different colors allowing you to personalize your musical experience. The way the colors are dripping from each iPod is also another successful design element showing how vivid the colors of the new iPod are.

This is a very successful design for many reasons. The first being that it is very visually appealing right off the bat, and text and color are combined to make a rather unique image of a pepsi bottle. The text overlapping the image seems crowded and oversized but is very clear and legible which I think adds rather than distracting from the design. Also Carson used a reverse reflection of his name in a different font underneath. Through his very complex design Carson seems to ignore most basic design theories and convey his messages in unorthodox ways.

airport-signage-inspiration-014

I believe this signage works because the different color portray different locations. The white space between each allows for clear reading.

Top-Creative-Anti-Smoking-Ads-12

I believe this sign works because the color contrast works. The smoke making an image of a gun portrays a clear message.

images-2

This works because it portrays a clear message. The idea of the baby with an oreo with drinking milk. Along with the letter spacing for the text on the bottom works.

images-3

This sign does not work because of the content. The content of alcohol and gun makes this sign extremely revolting. Lego is normally for kids so the idea of adult content should not be visible.

images-1

This sign does not work because when you think of red bull you think of it giving you wings. This revolting idea of bye bye eiffel tower does not give you any indication of an energy drink. Maybe power hungry instead.

images

I believe this is not a good design because of the grey background. It clashes with the white text which makes it a little difficult for it to read.

Punchcutting

It was fascinating to watch that video demonstrating exactly how much effort goes into traditional type-setting. At first I was impatient with the beginning of the course – I wanted to jump right into InDesign immediately. But as I saw more of the manual processes involved, I was forced to observe the subtle intricacies that go into selecting typefaces and setting them to design words. I understood more of how letter shapes flow and what makes each typeface unique – which are things I took for granted in the past.

I believe the design of this Nikewomen’s advertisement is successful. The message was made to empower female athletes and women in general.  The contrast between the grey image of a woman and the colorful background makes this piece interesting.  The words do not take away from the image. Instead they help get the message across by representing the curvature of a woman’s hips.

This design was used as an ad for kitkat. I thought this was utter brillance. Everyone pretty much knew what it was. It looks like a kit kat that had it wrapper slightly ripped off. The ad also serves as a chair as well.

movethecity

I thought the design was successful because they turn the city and made it look as it was part of a bicycle wheel. The text was nice and big so you knew it was about a marathon. The idea was about the marathon in the city.

The design for this was smart. It was centered towards the males. They put the car inside a glass box. It resembles those glass boxes where it say ” break in case of emergency ” but instead it says break in case of adventure. The car itself give a sense of adventure and they  wanted you to have that idea

.levi5_25

This was a rather unsuccessful design in that they had the jeans in the picture but the idea of jeans was not there. It was put in a rather unique situation that would not make the buyer say ohh I want to buy a pair of jeans.

Car-Financing-Ad

This design was for a car. There is a picture of a car ” sort of”. The car not really there. The words don’t match the picture. The picture look more for eggs than a car. The words can not relate to the picture.

pepsi-twist

The design for this doesn’t work. The idea of adding a new flavor is great. The idea of a lime pissing in your drink is not. It provides a revolting idea about your drink which you do not want you consumer to have.

post

I think this was successfully designed because the context is so clear and apparent to anyone who looks at it. Personalizing your own post is saying something about yourself, and I thought it was interesting and clever how they inserted a mirror as the stamp.

come-a-little-closer

At first I thought this was a little mortifying, but then I understood what it meant and I thought that it was executed very well. Many deaths occur because people are too close to the track and end up falling onto it. This design is so prominent with the negative space that when you look at it, the first thing you say is, “WHOA! I need to step back.”

ipod-music

I’ve always enjoyed Apple’s designs because they are intriguing and catching to the eye. This one really stood out to me because it goes well with the message they are trying to sell. The ipods represent a piano which makes music, and you can listen to this music on an ipod. I think that the purple background was perfect to the apparent white and black ipods.

badlawyerad0001

I think this design for a lawyer is poorly designed because I don’t know where to even begin to read. The color scheme is all over the place, and the important words are not prominent and pleasing to the eye. It is almost straining to look at this design.

rapscallions

This is another design that I think is too crowded because there are different colors going on, and too much text for a design like this. I think that it could work with less text and one color text.

Successful and Unsuccessful designs

This design has images that is totally relate to the context of the design. However, I believe that it has too much wording and  some words such as “coffee,” “exotic,” “soccer” and so on don’t have a contrast between the word and the background. It basically those words disappear on the design. I think that those words should have different font color.

cover-image-infographics

This design is all opposite from the first one, the background is lighter than the words and it gives a natural contrast between both of them. The type of font color illumines the poster, and it has a mix of font colors.

deeply-graphic

I believe that this design works as well as the previous one, the background color doesn’t affect the message. The mix of texture and font between pink, black and white color make the design very interesting and attractive. It is easy to read the message.

images-2

On the other hand, the red and white color design doesn’t work together as the previous one. I think that this design need a different color of background, because the flag and the last paragraph don’t show up as the “U.S. Navy” and “AO”

ivy_tai

This design has a lot of images on it, but it works perfectly. I am able to see the contrast between the letter and the background color. Dark background means lighter font color and vice versa. Also, the color of the images are the same used for the letters. I think it works perfectly.

images-1

I dislike this design, because the colors weren’t used properly. Even though, I said previously that dark background means lighter font color, in this design you don’t see the connection between colors. If I don’t pay much attention to the design and word “IN” I couldn’t tell that was there. I believe, the background shouldn’t be white because the letter “adventure” disappears on the design.
