To deal with a local power outage, SRDS says that it will be down from 9 PM tonight (Monday, September 13) until 9 PM tomorrow night (Tuesday, September 14).

OneSearch Tip: Filtering for Images from Artstor
A recent update from Ex Libris finally let us index our Artstor records in OneSearch. To find images from Artstor in OneSearch, just use the “Images” filter after you run a search. Here’s an example of a search that I ran for the sculptor Louise Bourgeois and then limited it to “Images.”
PrivCo Down for Planned Maintenance on August 30
From 8 pm – 11 pm on Monday, August 30, PrivCo will not be accessible as the company does maintenance on its platform. Thoughtfully, the vendor waited until 3:30 PM on a summer Friday to announce “scheduled maintenance” for the following Monday.
Fix for Linking Errors from OneSearch to EBSCO Databases
EBSCO fixed the problem on their end that was causing error messages when users tried to go from links in OneSearch records into EBSCOhost databases for the full text (see last week’s blog post for details). Ex Libris is still updating its system in Alma for handling those links based on changes made by EBSCO, so some residual errors may crop up. If you have any linking problems from OneSearch into any database, please report them ASAP to Mike Waldman or me.
Linking Errors from OneSearch to EBSCOhost Databases (resolved)
Most (if not all) links from OneSearch records that lead into EBSCOhost databases dead end at an “OpenURL Connection” error page from EBSCO that looks like one of these:
Version 1:
Version 2:
This is the same problem that cropped up in June that EBSCO and Ex Libris eventually fixed. It’s now back again. Until the two vendors sort this out (again), here is the workaround:
- Look for another database link in the OneSearch record that goes to something other than an EBSCOhost database
- Use the A-Z list of databases to get to a link to the relevant EBSCOhost database and then run the search for the article within that database.
LibGuides System Is Down (see update)
Springshare customers in the US are reporting that their LibGuides systems are down. Here at Baruch, this means that we can’t access:
- research guides
- e-reserves
- A-Z list of databases
As an alternative means of access to our A-Z list of databases, there is this Google Docs spreadsheet we can use to get links to all of our databases.
As soon as Springshare resolves the problem, an update will be posted here.
UPDATE (July 27, 2021, 12:17 pm): All LibGuides systems are now working again.
Updated Backup List of Database Links
Every six months, I generate a new backup list of all of our databases that appear on our A-Z database page. This backup exists in case the LibGuides system that hosts our databases page goes down.
The latest version of the backup list (created on 15 July 2021) can be found in the “Databases Overview” page in the Library Services wiki (look near the top of that page for a link to the backup list).
New Database: Military & Government Collection (HeinOnline)
This database from HeinOnline offers ebooks, journal articles, special reports, government documents, and legal documents, all relating to the history and administration of the armed forces in the United States. A link to it can be found on the A-Z databases page and on the Government – Databases page. The contents of the database aren’t yet indexed by Alma or Primo, which means the only way to find and use the content is by searching directly in the database.
Here’s a video overview from HeinOnline about this new database:
Facets Now on Left Side of Search Results in OneSearch
Last week, the CUNY Office of Library Services moved the facets that appear on the search results pages from the right side to the left side. By placing the facets on the left, the layout of search pages now is similar to the layout of most of our databases (EBSCO, ProQuest, etc.) as well as to search results pages on shopping websites.
It is hoped that by putting the facets inĀ OneSearch this familiar location, our users will be more likely to use them. Using reports in Alma Analytics, we should be able to spot any change in facet usage in the coming months.
New Names for Seventeen Gale Databases
On Thursday, June 24, seventeen Gale databases will be renamed on our A-Z databases page. This work will bring our naming convention for Gale databases in line with the names that Gale actually uses in their interfaces; it also parallels the work that the CUNY Office of Library Services has recently completed in Alma so that the correct names display in OneSearch records.
As you can see from the table below, the new names stick the word “Gale” in front of either the old name (“Academic OneFile” becomes “Gale Academic OneFile”) or in front of a slightly modified name (“Opposing Viewpoints in Context” becomes “Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints.”) Gale has been trying to corral their many databases into a handful of branded platforms: Gale OneFile, Gale in Context, and Gale Literature.
Current Name | New Name |
---|---|
Academic OneFile | Gale Academic OneFile |
General OneFile | Gale General OneFile |
Health and Wellness Resource Center | Gale Health and Wellness |
Biography in Context | Gale in Context: Biography |
Global Issues in Context | Gale in Context: Global Issues |
Opposing Viewpoints in Context | Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints |
Science in Context | Gale in Context: Science |
U.S. History in Context | Gale in Context: U.S. History |
World History in Context | Gale in Context: World History |
Literature Criticism Online | Gale Literature Criticism |
Literature Resource Center | Gale Literature Resource Center |
Book Review Index | Gale Literature: Book Review Index |
Dictionary of Literary Biography | Gale Literature: Dictionary of Literary Biography |
LitFinder | Gale Literature: LitFinder |
Contemporary Women’s Issues | Gale OneFile: Contemporary Women’s Issues |
LegalTrac | Gale OneFile: LegalTrac |
Popular Magazines | Gale OneFile: Popular Magazines |
On the A-Z databases page, temporary redirects will be put in place for the handful of Gale databases that are most used (as determined by clicks in 2020 from the LibGuides system).
If you have any questions, please reach out to Michael Waldman or me.
