Due to low use, we’ve cancelled our subscription to MagillOnLiterature Plus. For a list of the databases for literature research that we have, please see the English – Databases page and Chris Tuthill’s English research guide.
New Database: Safari
We now subscribe to Safari, a collection of over 40,000 ebooks in information technology. This database includes all titles published by O’Reilly Media as well as titles from a number of other publishers. The collection also includes videos and a small number of case studies.
To use Safari, you’ll need to use the link on the A-Z database list (there is also a link on the ebooks databases page). Logging in to Safari from on or off campus requires a Baruch or CUNY SPS email address. Once the user provides that email, they are in. If a user wants to be able to use the iOS or Android app and read ebooks offline, they will need to set up an account with Safari using their Baruch or CUNY SPS email address and a password of their own choosing.
The vendor hopes to have their content indexed in the coming months by Ex Libris so records for each ebook can be found in the Primo discovery service (OneSearch here at CUNY).
Library Catalog Down for Maintenance on November 22
Between 1 am and 10 am on Thursday, November 22, the catalog will be down for planned maintenance (re-indexing of several fields).
Database Cancellation: RealQuest
As of October 31, we no longer subscribe to the RealQuest database. Links to it have been removed from the LibGuides system.
Off Campus Access to DSM-5 Library Restored
Thanks to the ingenuity of folks on the EZproxy mailing list, a solution was found that fixes the off campus access problem we were having with the DSM-5 Library. I’ve applied that fix to the configuration file on our EZproxy server and tested that it works.
Three New Database Trials from Gale
Through November 23, we have on and off campus access to the following three trials, all of which are linked to on the Trials tab of the databases page.
Gale Interactive: Chemistry
Vendor description: Users can manipulate and explore the periodic table, molecules, and other 3D models, allowing students to better visualize and understand concepts in chemistry. Reference and periodical content provide additional context for further understanding.
Gale Interactive: Human Anatomy
Vendor description: Users can manipulate and explore 3D models, allowing students to better visualize and understand human anatomy. Reference and periodical content provide additional context for further understanding.
Gale Small Business Builder
Note that you will have to create your own account to use the product. Look for the orange “Get Started” button in the center of the home page.
Vendor description: Gale Small Business Builder helps patrons interested in planning and optimizing their businesses or nonprofits. Built for aspiring entrepreneurs and those with existing small businesses, it provides a step-by-step process supported by a rich variety of recognized tools that enable users to produce complete business plans and other documents essential for gaining access to capital and growing their enterprise.
Please share these with relevant faculty and encourage them to use the feedback form linked to on the database trials page.
Alternative Route to Logging into Library Services Wiki
If you’re unable to log into the Library Services Wiki or some other wiki space at Baruch, a good workaround is to log in at the main page for Baruch’s Confluence system.
Off Campus Access Problems for DSM-5 Library
Some recent changes made by the vendor (American Psychiatric Association) on their end seem to be preventing us (and most other libraries using EZproxy) from connecting to the DSM-5 Library from off campus. On campus access remains unaffected.
I’ll update here as soon as the vendor and OCLC (the vendor for EZproxy) sort this out.
Temporary Location of the Reference Desk
Now that work has begun on repairing the skylights in the atrium, the reference desk has been relocated to the reference suite of offices in room 225.
MLA Moving to Ebsco
You may have noticed on the databases page that there are now links for MLA through both Gale and Ebsco. As of January, Ebsco will have exclusive rights to MLA, and Gale will no longer offer it. Ebsco will offer a full-text version of MLA, but so far we do not have access to that. CUNY Central is providing access and we may get full text at some point.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
