This article from Harvard Business Review challenges the traditional framework of boards. The authors advise the board members to think like activists who proactively renew the structure of the board and organize themselves as “active strategic partner of management.” An activist board is deeply informed of and engaged with the organization’s long-term strategy and knows to ask the right questions from the outside in that probe the adequacy of the organization’s portfolio and management. According to the article, this activist Board approach is encouraged for for-profits, but it may be beneficial for nonprofits to adopt as well.
