My resource this week is this article from The Nonprofit Times outlining the controversy that erupted last year around Wounded Warrior Project. This case study is relevant because it touches on issues of mission creep, what levels of indirect expenses are appropriate, and how those two can relate to each other. Wounded Warriors was faulted in an investigation by the NYT for spending lavishly on fundraising and salaries rather than direct programs—particularly interesting in this case since WW’s CEO has been a leading critic of the unwritten industry rule regarding keeping administrative costs low vs. investing in staff and fundraising.
