Earlier this week, I came across the following piece about how the white supremacist National Policy Institute lost its non-profit status after forgetting to file with the state of Virginia in 2016.
I began to think about the days during the Obama administration of when there was accusations that the IRS discriminated giving non-profit status to these types of organization and began to think of the greater role of the IRS in providing non-profit status.
As a part of the filling, Richard Spencer, the current head of the organization, noted that the mission is “of this charitable organization is to secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” On paper, it’s the type of mission to raise an eyebrow. Yet, it’s almost vague enough that the IRS lets it through.
I’m here thinking about whether the role of the IRS should be to further read between the lines of the mission to understand the true intention of these missions so it deny renewals such as these.
Thoughts?
