What does it mean it to be a good leader? How should the CEO and Board share leadership of the organization?
Leaders have a crucial role within an organization, a role that is integral to its success, efficiency, and the accomplishment of the employees. I believe that a good leader holds the qualities of reliability, consistency, and perseverance. Therefore, a good leader must possess the qualities of effective commination, trustworthiness, and ambitiousness. A good leader needs to have some level of connection to his followers and motivates others. Firstly, shared leadership is successful only with shared vision. The Board and CEO should agree and believe in the vision of the organization’s future. Secondly, the board must work with the CEO and staff from agreed-upon operational and strategic annual plans and selected strategies to achieve clearly described goals and expectations. Thirdly, mutual respect and trust are very important in shared leadership. Shared leadership must be rooted in a culture of mutual respect and trust between the board and CEO. When there is a lack of mutual respect and trust between the CEO and the Board, shared leadership fails in that organization. Therefore, it is crucial that the CEO partners with the board members, providing them genuine responsibilities based on their knowledge, as that will confirm their skills are satisfying, valuable and impactful to the organization—and to them. Fourthly, transparency and accountability are required in the shared leadership. Open communication, significant communication and regular reports of performance brings accountability and transparency between the board and the CEO. Through this system, both parties will have some preparation for negative or positive matters while leading the organization. Lastly, board members bring genius and outlooks to CEOs and their staff based on various skilled, civic and personal experiences. Similarly, board members can learn from CEOs and staff because CEOs and staff have real life experience in organizational programs, their ideas have social and economic impact. In this case, shared learning is important and through this way both parties benefit from exchanging their learning and knowledge in terms of the leadership of the organization.
