Having worked in various nonprofits I am aware of the importance of the non-profit sector and the important role nonprofits play in our society. A “non-profit” organization is one that exists for a specific purpose and all the money earned is reinvested into the company. Non-profit organizations are mission driven and all the work done surrounds advancing the organization’s mission. Non-profits can be a variety of different organizations including 501(c)3 organizations which are tax-exempt charitable organizations.
Non-profits play many roles in society, chief among them providing the community with the services they need. The government is no longer able to fullfil all the needs of its citizens, and when governmental programs are being cut, nonprofits step in and fill these needs. Non-profits fill community needs such as education, spirituality, health, arts and culture, economic development to name a few. This concept of filling a need is crucial to being a non-profit as well as to society as a whole. I have worked for non-profits that aim to end hunger as well as those that aim to provide more feminism within the orthodox Jewish world. The variety of organizations builds up this sector and helps provide public goods to society.
