Lesson One Reflections

A non-profit provides some base level if not more of public benefit, is nonpartisan and does not distribute revenue to shareholders.  Revenue is distributed amongst administrative costs and also allocated towards initiatives that meet its mission.  Non-profits have an opportunity to meet societal needs that are not addressed by government funding or policy.  As the Urban Institute’s report The Nonprofit Sector in Brief 2015 pointed out the top three public charitable organizations were:  Human Services (35.5 percent); Education (17.1%); and Health (12.9%).  These are clearly three societal needs that are not fully funded by the government. Societal and economic inequities can negatively impact the distribution of assistance that vulnerable populations receive, particularly in three areas of human services, education and health which should be considered basic needs.  Non-profit organizations play an important role in recitifying inequities, not only in meeting needs but also in advocating on behalf of vulnerable populations, attempting to affect change in policies.
